The Prince is back! On Friday, Once Upon A KATAMARI — the first KATAMARI DAMACY series entry in nearly 15 years — has officially rolled onto shelves. The Bandai Namco and RENGAME project once again puts The Prince behind his colossal rolling ball, called his “Katamari,” in a celestial effort to rebuild the skies after his father, the King of All Cosmos, accidentally destroys the planet. This time, however, The Prince isn’t pushing through cluttered bedrooms; The Prince is propelling his katamari across time.

“In this puzzle action/adventure game,” the Once Upon A KATAMARI website reads, “The King of All Cosmos was fiddling with a scroll and accidentally destroys the earth and stars. Now The Prince must roll their katamari across time itself, collecting objects through stages in the Jurassic Period, the Ice Ages, historic Japan, and more to rebuild the glittering night sky.”
In Once Upon A KATAMARI, players and their respective Princes will haul katamari through all-new stages set to a new soundtrack that gives the already-iconic franchise music a run for its money. Pop into a new competitive multiplayer mode, tinker with customization options not seen in earlier games, and modernize your route with in-game tools, including magnets. In the competitive new KatamariBall mode, Princes roll the largest katamari they can and convert it into points before time runs out. Confident in your katamari-rolling skills? Show ’em off online; KatamariBall will support both online multiplayer and offline play against CPUs.
About ‘KATAMARI’

The KATAMARI franchise, created by Keita Takahashi in the early 2000s, has endured the test of time. In the series, the playable Prince must reassemble the universe after the King’s latest destruction spree. To do so, Princes push a bumpy ball, called a “katamari,” through messes before time’s up. The ball pulls nearby objects in, and as players push and push, it continues to expand. The bigger your katamari, the larger objects players can pick up. At the start, players’ modestly-sized katamari can pick up paperclips or other petitle finds; by the end of a successful run, your planet-sized katamari transforms into just that and returns to the skies.
Since the inaugural KATAMARI DAMACY launched in 2004, the series has released a total of 17 KATAMARI titles. The last game to feature comprehensive new content, though, was 2009 PlayStation 3 game KATAMARI FOREVER. Following its release, the studio pivoted to re-releasing touch-reliant versions of its game for smartphones and handheld devices like the PlayStation Vita. The fresh new game, Once Upon A KATAMARI, was announced during a July 2025 Nintendo Direct.
