Microsoft admits ‘The Outer Worlds 2’ price too high

Less than three months have passed since multinational tech company Microsoft first announced it would raise Xbox console and game prices, and the brand is already backtracking.

In announcements shared across Xbox’s social accounts, Microsoft and Obsidian confirmed upcoming sci-fi sequel The Outer Worlds 2 will no longer retail for the previously confirmed $79.99. The Outer Worlds 2, slated for release on October 24, 2025, will sell for $69.99.

Microsoft confirmed The Outer Worlds 2‘s price change in an exclusive statement given to Windows Central. “We’re focused on bringing players incredible worlds to explore, and will keep our full priced holiday releases, including The Outer Worlds 2, at $69.99 – in line with current market conditions,” the brand said. The article continues, confirming that gamers with existing pre-orders are eligible for refunds at the point of purchase. Some retailers may begin issuing refunds as early as today, though more are expected in the days ahead.

Back in May, Microsoft revealed it would hike retail values of its Xbox games to $80, and, unsurprisingly, already budget-conscious consumers met the change with complaints and criticisms.

Microsoft isn’t the only big-name brand to bump up retail values; both Sony and Nintendo have recently come under fire for questionable pricing practices. While some brands and execs are receptive to consumer outcry, not all are. Regarding Borderlands 4‘s rumored $80 retail price, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford controversially said “real fans” would be willing to shell out more for modern releases. While Pitchford has since (clumsily) walked his statement back, many players remain soured.

While costs of, well, everything continue to jump, gamers fear gradually-rising game prices will eventually paywall most working-class fans from a formerly accessible hobby. I’m just as excited for The Outer Worlds 2 as the next guy, but $80 is a mighty big ask, especially when it’s not a one-off but a small part of a sweeping trend.

The Outer Worlds 2 launches on October 29, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PC, and PS5. The sequel will also be available via Xbox Game Pass on launch day.
