10 Comedies That Are Absolutely Perfect

There's Something About Mary

There’s nothing like the perfect comedy. It makes us laugh no matter how many times we’ve watched it.

A good comedy can lift our spirits on the worst days, erasing a bad mood in seconds. Whether it’s an all-time classic or a guilty pleasure, we think these comedy movies are perfect from start to finish.

Tropic Thunder

Ben Stiller’s comedy may not be seen as politically correct today, but it’s an intelligent satire on Hollywood.

From the over-the-top executive Les Grossman, played by Tom Cruise, to the caricatures of its main cast (Still, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black), Tropic Thunder knows how to deliver the laughs while still providing thoughtful commentary on the movie industry.

Airplane!

From a satirical comedy to a straight-up parody, Airplane! is nonstop laughs from start to finish.

Airplane! never takes itself seriously, allowing its talented cast to shine. Leslie Nielsen is in his element, and Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty are an excellent leading duo. The real breakout star here, though, is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Unfortunately, the sequels would not be able to match the original.

Blazing Saddles

Mel Brooks is the master of comedy, and this is his magnum opus.

Blazing Saddles combines the parody of Airplane! with the satire and commentary of Tropic Thunder. Although it may have failed to resonate with critics upon release, time has been kind to it, and critics and fans have given it the praise it deserves.

We can’t forget the performances of Gene Wilder and Cleavon Little, either.

Dumb and Dumber

It won’t win any awards for its intelligence, but we can’t help but love Dumb and Dumber.

The slapstick comedy embraces its stupidity, delivering nonstop quotable lines throughout.

Fun fact: Jeff Daniels was not considered for the Dumb and Dumber cast. Nicolas Cage was initially cast to co-star with Jim Carrey, who had recently made a splash with his performance in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

Animal House

It doesn’t get more classic than this.

While there are plenty of movies from the National Lampoon collection, none are as perfect from start to finish as Animal House.

Its impressive ensemble cast all have a chance to shine, and its pacing means there’s never a dull moment.

It’s also an excellent vehicle for Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

A Thanksgiving traditional in our household, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles showcases Steve Martin and John Candy at their best.

John Hughes’ script elevates the typical road trip comedy to one filled with laughs and plenty of heart, thanks to the movie’s dramatic ending.

Hughes is best known for his teen movies, and Planes is his only rated-R film. It earns that R rating, though, thanks to Martin’s iconic rant.

Trading Places

From one holiday tradition to another, Trading Places is a Christmas staple in our household, and for good reason.

The SNL-style comedic take on Prince and the Pauper stars Dan Akroyd, Eddie Murphy, and Jamie Lee Curtis. All three actors have impressive on-screen chemistry with the entire cast. Eddie Murphy is peak Eddie Murphy here, with Akroyd perfectly showcasing his descent from upper class to homelessness.

Another classic 90s comedy, There’s Something About Mary shows why the Farrelly Brothers (who also made Dumb and Dumber) were once an in-demand duo in 90s comedy.

Cameron Diaz is the star attraction, but her supporting cast of Ben Stiller, Matt Dilon, Lee Evans, and Chris Elliot do an excellent job of elevating a simple premise to comedic gold.

Plus, that Brett Favre cameo at the end is a riot.

Hot Fuzz

The most modern comedy on our list, Hot Fuzz, is a spiritual successor to Shaun of the Dead. It reunites director Edgar Wright with Shaun Pegg and Nick Frost.

It’s a clever, fast-paced comedy combining clever writing and nonstop wit. Best of all, the action sequences rival the classic action movies it pays homage to.

Timothy Dalton is also perfectly cast, too.

Groundhog Day

When it comes to comedy, you have to talk about Bill Murray as an actor and Harold Ramis as a director.

While their performance in Ghostbusters is iconic, we’re giving the edge to Groundhog Day. It allows Murray to display his full range of abilities as a comedic and dramatic actor.

Ramis’ direction and script, co-written by Danny Rubin, are the cherry on top of this classic comedy.
