Popular gaming and entertainment news outlet Polygon has reportedly been sold to Valnet and laid off a significant number of its staff.

Polygon’s now-former employees are taking to social media to share news of their termination.

Across microblogging service Bluesky, former Polygon staff are detailing their departures and beginning job searches.

Chris Plante, Polygon’s co-founder, shared he is “no longer with” the brand in a new Bluesky post.

Plante uses the remaining allotted characters to urge other outlets to extend opportunities to terminated Polygon staff. “If you’re hiring, please consider the many talented writers and editors now on the market. Every one of them deserves a spot on your staff. I won’t be talking more about the sale because I wasn’t involved. Going to hang out with my kid. Taking wins where I can.”

Valnet issued a news release following the acquisition, with a quote from Valnet CEO and Founder Hassan Youssef:

“It is with immense pride and gratitude that we welcome Polygon into our growing family of world-class gaming brands,” said Hassan Youssef, CEO & Founder at Valnet. “This moment marks a powerful reaffirmation of our deep commitment to gaming, a space we’ve passionately invested in for years. The addition of Polygon not only strengthens our editorial muscle but also amplifies our ability to deliver unmatched value to both audiences and advertisers. At Valnet, we’re not just participants in this space; we are its undisputed leader, and today, that leadership has never felt stronger.”

Valnet is the parent company of several operating gaming outlets, including GameRant, DualShockers, TheGamer, and OpenCritic.

Polygon, a Vox Media subsidiary founded in 2012, spent more than a decade as one of the industry’s leading media outlets, boasting expansive and in-depth coverage of all things geek culture.

According to Valnet’s news release, Polygon attracts more than 6 million visitors to its site monthly and boasts more than 3.5 million followers on social media.

Following post-lockdown layoffs and other controversies, the video game industry is struggling to regain its footing.

Just yesterday, media giant Electronic Arts announced the termination of more than 300 employees as well as the cancellation of its next Titanfall game.

Amid price hikes and tech-threatening tariffs, the latest round of layoffs only amplifies employees’ and consumers’ questions regarding the future of independent media and the overall health of the video game industry.
