On Thursday, aptly-named Nintendo of America boss Doug Bowser announced he would step down from the company at the end of 2025. Bowser has worked with Nintendo since leaving Electronic Arts in 2015, and has served as the brand’s president since Reggie Fils-Aimé’s departure in 2019.

Nintendo shared details of the internal change-up in a news release on Thursday, praising Bowser’s oversight during the Switch 2 launch as well as his contributions to global brand expansion via on-screen and real-world experiences:

“Bowser’s distinguished tenure includes delivering on the promise of the Nintendo Switch system to change the way people play video games and bring new experiences to a broad range of consumers. Earlier this year, he expanded on that mission when he oversaw the launch of Nintendo Switch 2 in the Americas and helped establish the system as the best-selling video game console of all time in its initial sales period.

“Also, during his time with Nintendo, the company saw significant expansion into entertainment ventures such as theme parks and films, all with the goal of giving more people more opportunities to engage with Nintendo’s characters and worlds.”

Meanwhile, Bowser expanded on his departure in a heartwarming, nostalgic post on X:

“Today, I announced my plan to retire from Nintendo, effective December 31, 2025. Nintendo has been an integral part of my life for 44 years, starting with Donkey Kong Arcade as a kid in college. It has been an honor to contribute to this incredible company and bring our beloved characters and worlds to fans through our video games, theme parks, and movie experiences. I extend my best wishes to Devon Pritchard as she leads Nintendo of America forward, and I thank all of you for your passion and support of Nintendo and you can count on me to remain a Nintendo fan!”

Bowser’s successor, Devon Pritchard, will be the first female president in the company’s decades-long history. Pritchard will assume the role following Bowser’s December 31 departure. Pritchard, who has been with Nintendo of America for nearly two decades, currently serves as the company’s Executive Vice President of Revenue, Marketing and Consumer Experience.

Additionally, longtime Nintendo executive Satoru Shibata will shift to Nintendo of America as its new CEO. Shibata has worked with Nintendo in some capacity since 1984, and currently serves as Managing Executive Officer, Corporate Director, and Member of the Board at Nintendo Co., Ltd. (NCL).
