The team behind popular battle royale hit PlayerUnknown: Battlegrounds says it is formally ending support for players on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
The announcement isn’t a shocking one — the studio laid out plans to discontinue support earlier this year — but it’s a bummer for fans sticking with their last-gen consoles. With creeping consumer costs and post-tariff tech prices, fans hoping to hold off on buying current-gen hardware like the PlayStation 5 or Xbox X|S may have their hands forced.
The PUBG team issued a full statement via its website, first starting with a sentimental tip of the hat to loyal players. “It weighs heavily on us to deliver this news to our console players who have enjoyed PUBG on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for so many years,” the release reads. “We still vividly remember the epic battles, the heart-stopping moments, and the camaraderie that brought us together. We are deeply grateful for every moment you’ve spent with us over the past eight years.”
After acknowledging its passionate fanbase, the team continues:
“Starting November 13, 2025, PUBG Console will be supported only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
“This shift is a necessary step toward aligning PUBG Console with current-gen consoles. To provide our players with a more stable gameplay environment on console and ensure a smoother, more seamless experience with future updates, we’ve decided to transition to current-gen consoles. Following this transition, console players will see improved visuals and more stable frame rates. In addition, we expect to reduce ongoing crash issues through memory-related optimizations.
“As part of this transition, we will be ending support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.”
According to the team’s rundown, the transition will occur during live server maintenance on November 13, 2025. However, the team says the schedule is subject to change “depending on the review process of each platform.”
Thankfully, player data and past purchases will remain associated with users’ existing accounts. After the scheduled server maintenance in November, fans can simply hop from one console to another and log in with their current credentials — “no separate transfer process required.” Additionally, “PlayStation users will need to download the PS5 version of PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS from the PlayStation Store after November 13 in order to continue playing. Xbox users who already have the game installed will receive the current-gen version automatically via Smart Delivery starting November 13.”
The news release briefly touches on refunds before sharing supported post-transition console specs and comparative in-game screenshots. Among the game’s optimized features are “carefully configured” memory and graphical specifications, as well as all-new Resolution and Performance modes. The team says these changes are “not only aimed at providing a more stable environment, but also at preparing for larger updates in the future. It marks an important step forward for the long-term growth of PUBG Console, and will allow us to respond more swiftly to the evolving needs of the console ecosystem.”
PUBG: Battlegrounds was first released by Krafton and its subsidiary, PUBG Studios, on December 20, 2017. The PvP shooter pits 100 players against one another in an intense, last-man-standing battle for first place.
