Grand Theft Auto VI studio Rockstar Games is making headlines once again. This time, though, it’s because the studio has confirmed its outlaw epic, Red Dead Redemption, is coming to consoles, mobile devices, and streaming giant Netflix this December. According to Rockstar’s newswire release, players can again join John Marston on the American frontier when the game launches on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, and Netflix on December 2, 2025.

Rockstar’s comprehensive news release touches on in-game upgrades, save data transfers, and visual enhancements. And if Marston’s return isn’t exciting enough, Rockstar says players also get access to zombie-packed offshoot, Undead Nightmare:

“On December 2, the epic Western adventures Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare will be available for the latest mobile devices and on current generation consoles — with free upgrades, the ability to carry over game progress, and a number of enhancements.

“Step into the events immediately following the blockbuster Red Dead Redemption 2, in the critically acclaimed tale of John Marston’s journey to bury his blood-stained past. In its zombie-horror companion Undead Nightmare, fight to find a cure for the zombie plague that has overrun the frontier. All these new versions feature the complete single-player experiences of both games, and also include bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition.”

Rockstar shared a minute-long announcement trailer on YouTube and Instagram. The latter has garnered more than 110,000 likes in just one hour.

Rockstar Teases Netflix, Mobile Compatibility

According to Rockstar’s news release, players can “take Marston’s journey with them wherever they go with Red Dead Redemption’s debut on compatible iOS and Android devices.” The studio briefly mentions “mobile-friendly control options,” but doesn’t elaborate. Additionally, Rockstar’s statement says Netflix members will also be able to download and play Red Dead Redemption alongside everyone else when it drops on December 2. Game access via the streaming service reportedly comes “as part of [Netflix users’] subscription.”

No other Netflix-related details are available at the time of writing — compatible subscription plans, supplemental fees, and the like — but with the release date on the horizon, we’re likely to hear soon.

Apple’s App Store listing is already up, and while iPhone users can’t return to the Old West just yet, the listing’s limited information raises more questions than answers:

  • Release Date: Rockstar’s release claims all versions will be playable on December 2, but the App Store listing shows a release date of December 4.
  • In-App Purchases: If Netflix subscribers pay for a membership, and all versions include bonus GOTY content and the Undead DLC, what are these supplemental costs?
  • Language: Red Dead Redemption is playable in 13 languages; however, the app is only available in English. This could change, of course, but the inclusion of multilingual subtitles and other accessibility features means more users can enjoy the game who otherwise may not have been able.

Upgrades and Enhancements

Have a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S? Rockstar says you can anticipate 60 FPS, HDR support, and 4K resolution (hardware permitting). Handheld fans with a Nintendo Switch 2 will receive “support for DLSS, HDR, mouse controls, and the same fluid 60 frames per second gameplay at high resolution.”

If you already have a copy for PlayStation 4, an OG Switch, or a backwards-compatible Red Dead Xbox One download, you’ll be able to digitally upgrade your game at no extra cost. “Anyone who owns the PS4 version can utilize previous PS4 save data to pick up where they left off, and Switch 2 players can continue with their previous save data from the previous Nintendo Switch console.”
