The rumors are true: Yakuza Kiwami 3, a complete remake of the 2009 action RPG Yakuza 3, is on the horizon. Yakuza Kiwami 3 will join the series’ first and second Kiwami remakes, released in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Ryu Ga Gotoku (RGG), the Japanese studio behind the storied Like a Dragon franchise, revealed the upcoming remake and the new Dark Ties tie-in during its RGG Summit livestream on September 23.
The studio stressed that Yakuza Kiwami 3 is not a remaster; unlike Kiwami 1 and 2, Kiwami 3 will be a complete, from-scratch remake. The game was made using Ryu Ga Gotoku’s in-house Dragon Engine, which it introduced with Yakuza 6.
According to RGG Director Masayoshi Yokoyama, fans can expect “significant changes,” including some to the story. However, the studio didn’t divulge how vast those would be, and how profoundly they’d affect Kazuma and Haruka’s Okinawa adventure.
Other changes like quality-of-life improvements, enhanced visuals, cast swaps, UI modernization, and new battle styles are also expected. Kiwami 3 will also feature English voice acting.

RGG Summit 2025 celebrates the Like a Dragon IP’s decades-long history with a full Yakuza Kiwami 3 trailer, new content reveal, and surprise appearances from franchise voice actors to answer questions about the series’ personal and cultural impact. Alongside Kiwami 3, the studio is also working on Stranger Than Heaven, though RGG said this event will focus on the Like a Dragon franchise.

The new Dark Ties offshoot will be included alongside Yakuza Kiwami 3, and will feature Mine as the game’s protagonist. Check out the brand-new reveal here.

This is a developing story, as the RGG Summit is ongoing. Stay tuned for more.
