Sony PS5 celebrates 5th birthday with 84m in lifetime sales

The PlayStation 5 officially celebrates its fifth birthday on Wednesday, November 12 — the same day as its State of Play Japan presentation — and the company’s new sales performance figures serve as a cherry atop the console’s half-decade run. In its new financial report, released on Tuesday, Sony reported it shipped 3.9 million PS5 units during the second fiscal quarter of 2025. Altogether, Sony has sold more than 84.2 million PlayStation 5 systems since its launch in November 2020.

The brand’s Game & Network Services division saw significant growth in Q2 2025. All things considered, Sony aims to sell around 15 million PS5 consoles in its current fiscal year ending March 31, 2025. While the PS4 sold nearly 18 million units during the same period, Sony expects sales of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI to boost PS5 sales for 2026. With the latest GTA VI delay, however, sales expectations are likely to change.

PS5 Console Sales in Q2 2025

Sony’s PlayStation 5 launched at a tumultuous time. The COVID-19 pandemic and related supply shortages, social distancing protocols, cost increases, production complications, and other factors derailed the company’s original launch plans. Still, Sony’s home system stuck it out.

In the second fiscal quarter of 2025, ending September 30, Sony sold nearly 4 million PS5 consoles (3.9 million). Compared to Q2 2024, the brand sold 3.8 units, with the new results showing a slight year-over-year (YoY) increase in console sales. PlayStation 5 system sales still lag behind those of the PlayStation 4. The PS5’s predecessor, released on November 15, 2013, sold 86 million units during its lifespan.

Sony’s subscription-based network offering, PlayStation Plus, was a driving factor behind Game & Network Services’ growth. Related revenue rose nearly 14% (13.7%) to around $1.1 billion. In the previous quarter, the same division generated only $1.03 billion. PlayStation Plus also welcomed more subscribers in the second quarter of 2025. PS Plus user counts jumped to 119 million monthly active users (MAUs). Comparatively, PS Plus player figures were around 116 million this time last year — an increase of around 2.5%.

When the lowest-level membership runs players $10 monthly ($80 for those able to pay outright), an additional 3 million enrollment agreements add up.

Sony’s new report touched on more than hardware sales. PS5 game software revenue saw a 2.7% bump in Q2 2025, pushing sales figures to around $4 billion. Sony reported about $3.9 billion during the same period in 2024. Physical software sales rose 2.9% to $228.7 million; digital software, including DLC and other downloadable minutiae, rose 1.6% to $3.68 billion.

Software units sold also increased in Q2 2025 compared to Q2 2024 — 80.3 million units up from 77.7 million — and Sony has Ghost of Tsushima sequel, Ghost of Yotei, to thank. Since the action-adventure title’s October 2 launch, Yotei has sold about 3.3 million copies.
