Sony is making the PS5 worse—again

As the games industry continues its shift from physical units to intangible downloads, Sony is purportedly set to release yet another Digital Edition of its PlayStation 5 console. However, according to prominent leaker billbil-kun, the new hardware on the horizon is a considerable downgrade from its predecessor.

In their latest Dealabs post, billbil-kun claims the new PS5 Digital Edition — designated “Chassis E” in the Dealabs’ documents — is reportedly launching soon in Japan and Europe, but will come with about 200GB less storage space than the older model. The OG hardware’s 1TB internal storage has been reduced to just 825 GB. For hardware that exclusively runs space-consuming downloads, a near-20% reduction in storage is substantial.

The report says Sony’s new 825GB Digital Edition console will retail in Europe beginning on Sept. 13, 2025. The system is expected to sell for €499 (about $582). Keep in mind that the original 1TB hardware, first released on Nov. 12, 2020, retailed in the U.S. for about $400Yikes.

Like nearly all consumer technology, home console prices decrease with age. As cutting-edge systems flood the market, their less powerful peers are moved from the main display to the markdown shelf. Like seasons, the console cycle continued. Global tech tariffs and inconceivable year-on-year growth goals have turned it on its head.

This isn’t Sony’s first increase this year. In May, U.S. PlayStation 5 console prices spiked following tariff concerns. Just one month later, Sony announced higher prices for its subscription-based PlayStation Plus offering. Last month, the brand said it would raise the cost of PS5 consoles in the U.S. again. “Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment,” the brand’s blog post reads. “As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.”

At the time of writing, the PlayStation 5 Pro retails in the U.S. for about $750. They’re not the only brand within the Big 3 to raise prices; both Nintendo and Xbox raised prices on consoles, peripherals, as well as associated expenditures like subscription services.

While there’s no word on whether the less substantive PS5 will make its way stateside, if it does, here’s hoping it’s cheaper. No, like, waaay cheaper.

For my proud PlayStation fans, I do have some good news. In a PlayStation blog post uploaded on Wednesday, the brand shared an in-depth look at the highly anticipated IO Interactive third-person game, 007 First Light. Sony’s snack-sized State of Play focused solely on the upcoming action-adventure game.

“We’re thrilled to share an extensive look at 007 First Lightour third-person action-adventure game featuring a fully re-imagined original James Bond origin story. Built in-house at IO Interactive with our Glacier engine, we’re incredibly proud to share this wholly original Bond experience created from the ground up, one that blends the sharp tension of espionage with the bold spectacle the franchise is known for.

“In this special State of Play, we showcased footage from two missions that highlight the game’s immersive design and cinematic flair. From a covert operation at a high-stakes chess tournament in Slovakia, closing with a high-altitude showdown, to an infiltration of a lavish gala in Kensington, London, these missions offer a glimpse into the living and breathing worlds that Bond will navigate as he discovers the world of espionage.”
