Sunday morning, gamers worldwide sighed with relief after Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN) recovered from a 24-hour outage. The service, which hosts more than 115 million gamers per day, went down Friday night. In response, players around the globe took to social media to share concerns and seek answers.
While Sony has since given gamers the “all-clear” on the Playstation Network Service Status website, service resumed to more frustration than fanfare.
Even more frustrating than the outage was Sony‘s radio silence — the brand’s account on X (formerly Twitter) offered service subscribers little insight into the issue. Early Sunday morning, the brand’s @AskPlayStation X account confirmed the network has “fully recovered from an operational issue” and extended subscribers “an additional 5 days of service” for the inconvenience. Capcom also took to X, sharing that they’re considering extending their Monster Hunter Wilds due to the outage. The X post from @monsterhunter thanks players for “patience and understanding during this weekend’s PSN service issues” and explains the “exact details and timing [of the beta extension] are TBD, so please stay tuned.”
Sony has yet to explain the reason for the outage. As a result, social media users compared this weekend’s outage to the 2011 Sony hack, which compromised the account data of millions and downed PSN for nearly one month. The 2011 outage resulted from a colossal network breach that compromised the information of around 77 million PlayStation users. The hack remains among the most significant data breaches in history.
The corporation’s apologetic service extension eased few minds. Critics aired their grievances in numerous replies to the @AskPlayStation X post, with many citing unsatisfactory customer care and expressing concerns over a lack of transparency.
