On Monday, Copenhagen-based video game studio BetaDwarf announced a new investment from Japanese entertainment conglomerate Square Enix.
The undisclosed contribution from Square Enix will facilitate BetaDwarf’s development of top-down action-adventure RPG Vaultbreakers. The studio’s isometric ARPG, first revealed in January 2025, also got its first full gameplay trailer alongside news of the investment.
Square Enix’s investment in the upcoming role-playing game reflects AAA teams’ growing interest in community-centered, cooperative titles.
Hideaki Uehara, Square Enix’s General Manager of Business Development, spoke positively about the endeavor in a statement shared by GI.biz:
“Square Enix is always looking for high-quality games and talented development studios,” said , “When I played Vaultbreakers, I was genuinely excited by the experience of connecting with other players and exploring its rich game world.
“After visiting BetaDwarf and learning about the team’s mission and passion, we decided to invest in them to help realise their dream and bring this game to players around the world.”
BetaDwarf CEO Steffen Kabbelgaard expressed gratitude for Square Enix’s interest. “Being accompanied by Square Enix on our journey is an amazing access to a combination of knowledge, talent, and resources.
“Getting this additional support feels amazing when we are far into production already. I can really see how this enables a home run vs having just started on an uncertain journey.”
Danish studio BetaDwarf, founded in 2012, has acquired other investments in the past. According to GI.biz, the team received two notable contributions in 2019 — an undisclosed investment from London Venture Partners in April; the other, a September funding round that raised more than $6 million.
Vaultbreakers has no concrete release date just yet, though the project is in the midst of beta testing. Still, gamers can add the PvE/PvPvE brawler to their wishlists via Valve’s digital game distribution platform, Steam.
