The ‘Street Fighter’ Cast Is Odd, but Intriguing

Adrenaline is in our souls after hearing WWE superstar Cody Rhodes has been cast as Guile in the upcoming Street Fighter movie.

While the American Nightmare is a good fit for Guile, casting for the fighting game film feels fake at times because of some unconventional choices.

While it’s too early to tell whether Capcom will strike gold or strike out with this roster, we can take a look at the whole cast to see which character they’re picking when they step up at the arcade.

Andrew Koji — Ryu

Andrew Koji, skilled martial artist and star of the severely underrated martial arts drama, Warrior, is probably the best choice they’ve made yet. Letting a real martial artist play Mr. Street Fighter himself? I’m convinced Koji can pull off a Tatsumaki Senpu-kyaku in real life.

Heck, he might even be able to do a Hadoken with all that aura he’s carrying.

Callina Liang — Chun-Li

I’ll be honest, I don’t know much about Callina Liang. Still, her well-received role in Steven Soderbergh’s Sundance flick Presence shows she’s on the verge of becoming a breakout star.

We will have to wait and see how she’ll look on screen. She’s stylish, but will she be able to hit that Spinning Bird Kick? This is a performance to watch out for. We might get to see something special with Liang’s portrayal of Chunners.

Cody Rhodes — Guile

You can’t mention Chun-Li without one of her best friends, Guile. Wrestlers are already actors, and Cody Rhodes is one of the best. Cody and Roman finished their story in WWE. The pair brought in many new fans during WrestleMania 40, their star power catapulting WWE into a Netflix deal.

In Street Fighter, the American Nightmare will become the American Soldier. If he hits a Cross Rhodes, that will be my “Chicken Jockey” moment — I won’t be rude and throw things, though.

Noah Centineo — Ken Masters

Noah Centineo got his start on Disney sitcoms and became a Netflix teen idol. His latest role was in Warfare, one of the most stressful and well-acted war movies I’ve seen. After Warfare, it seems like Centineo’s time to step into bigger roles, and this could be his chance.

Street Fighter‘s Ken is one of the most beloved fighting game characters ever. If Centineo gives a good performance, he could get some of the most hardcore fans by his side: the fighting game community.

Roman Reigns — Akuma

The OTC joins the cast as Akuma, one of the most fearsome fruit stand owners in all of fighting games. To challenge Akuma means you consent to fight to the death. He is the person who controls Hado, a dark version of Ryu’s harnessable energy. His moveset is similar to Ryu’s, but more deadly.

How many lives will the Tribal Chief claim in the new Street Fighter movie?

Jason Momoa — Blanka

If you live under a block, you missed Momoa’s role in A Minecraft Movie, a massively successful game adaptation. Jason Momoa will return to video game movies with his role as Street Fighter‘s Blanka.

Momoa has been in many hit movies and shows throughout his career. He’s Aquaman, for crying out loud! We know he has the chops to pull off both sides of Blanka.

David Dastmalchian — M. Bison

Dastmalchian is a great actor who’s nailed many roles throughout his career, but this is one of the more controversial cast picks. M. Bison is supposed to be a big, imposing fighter who utilizes Psycho Power. While I have no doubt he can pull off the acting part, I don’t think he can pull off the “physically imposing” part.

Like the other roles, we’ll have to wait and see. He might have a sleeper build…

50 Cent — Balrog

Curtis James Jackson III, better known as 50 Cent, will become Balrog. Honestly, this casting could be decent.

50 Cent has been in movies and shows since the height of his music career in the mid-2000s. He’s been in some hit-or-miss silver-screen projects throughout his acting career, but his pay-cable show Power was a hit with critics and fans. A big part of the show’s success was 50 himself.

Jackson definitely has the build, but can he box like Mike Tyson? Hopefully, he will be fighting in front of the glorious bright casino.

Orville Peck — Vega

Queer icon and mask-wearing country singer Orville Peck is about to become masked fighter Vega, a vain villain who uses his colossal claw to shred opponents.

The musician is a skilled performer, singing alongside stars like Shania Twain, but Street Fighter will be Peck’s big-screen debut. His music has universal appeal, and his loyal fan base will surely fill some seats. Still, I’ve got high hopes.

Andrew Schulz — Dan Hibiki

Comedian and podcaster Andrew Schulz shown next to 'Street Fighter' character Dan Hibiki.

This is my biggest disappointment. I love Dan Hibiki, but this casting doesn’t track. I could be completely wrong, but just casting any comedian won’t do.

Dan is a joke character, but a fan favorite. Imagine Ryu and Ken, but losers. Think Dragon Ball Z‘s Hercule. He’s got hands, but is feeble compared to the rest of the cast.

I really would’ve loved someone like Alan Ritchson to don the long hair and pink gi, but Schulz has a chance to prove us wrong on the big screen. I hope he does a great job using the Strongest Style.
