The best indie roguelikes of 2026 (so far)

Only three months into 2026, and you’re already writing a “best-of” list? I realize how this looks, but when we’re this deep in an indie renaissance, keeping these irresistible new roguelikes to myself feels borderline negligent. As digital game platforms like Steam, Nintendo’s eShop, and others increasingly showcase independent developers’ works — often more affordable, approachable, and personal — players’ interests continue to shift from corporate, big-budget studios to comparatively modest studios run by passionate creatives.

Burnt out on billion-dollar blockbusters? I hear you. Thankfully, Steam has no shortage of budget-friendly, handmade hits for players hoping to spend a little less without sacrificing fun. And as the roguelike niche expands, players will find more unique IPs in addition to long-awaited sequels. These new roguelikes — all available on Steam now for under $25 apiece — have taken over both my “best roguelikes” list and my subconscious. Check out my picks and be sure to add each to your Steam wishlist, as indie teams rely on wishlist adds to boost platform visibility!

Slay the Spire 2, the follow-up to Mega Crit’s first installment in the fantasy roguelike series, finally landed on Steam last month in Early Access. The game’s still-in-development status hasn’t deterred determined fans one bit; Slay the Spire 2‘s Steam listing shows nearly 41,000 English-language reviews and an “Overwhelmingly Positive” average. While some in-game elements (including art) are incomplete, Mega Crit developers and designers have incorporated some charming hand-drawn stand-ins to take their place. They’re so cute!

“Slay the Spire requires a lot of player feedback so we can balance content, add quality of life features, and make sure the game runs without issues,” the game’s developers shared on Steam. “Early Access is also a chance for us to test experimental features, try exotic designs, identify niche problems, and helps us make sure the game is headed in the right direction.”

Slay the Spire 2 is available on Steam now for $24.99, though you might qualify for a bundle discount if your library contains qualifying items.

Man, I love pilin’ pups. Dogpile is a zany Suika Game with roguelike progression and tons of inconveniently-shaped dogs. Using a special deck of doggy cards, your job is to monitor the yard and merge mutts. As dogs fall into the fenced area, they’ll combine with other canines to grow in size. As the game continues, they’ll also pick up new abilities (and ailments like fleas), clean up at the groomer, and endure other game-altering changes.

“Utilize a clever array of powerful Dog Tags to modify how your dogs and their Traits function. Find interesting synergies and unique combos to aid you in all of your merging endeavors. And always remember your ultimate goal: BIGGER!”

Dogpile is on Steam for just $10 — a low price for a title with virtually endless replayability and some of the cutest in-game art I’ve seen all year.
