Top Grossing Movies of 2024

As we begin the new year, it’s time to look back and examine the top-grossing movies of 2024.

It was a big year for movies, with Disney and Pixar flexing their muscle, Marvel proving they can still dominate the box office, and the long-awaited debut of one of the most popular musicals of all time.

Here are 2024’s ten highest-grossing movies.

Inside Out 2

Gross: $1.78 Billion

Inside Out 2, a sequel to 2015’s Inside Out, proves Pixar can still deliver an incredible theatrical experience.

Although major cast members like Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling did not return, the animated film resonated with critics and moviegoers alike and was 2024’s top-grossing movie.

Deadpool & Wolverine

Gross: $1.3 Billion

Reports of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s demise may have been premature.

While it’s true that Marvel has struggled theatrically in recent years, Deadpool & Wolverine shows that comic book movies still have an audience when done well.

Of course, it helps when you have Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman doing what they do best.

Despicable Me 4

Gross: $970 Million

If you’re asking why they keep making Despicable Me movies, here’s your answer: the most recent entry made almost $1 billion at the box office.

While 2024 saw plenty of better animated releases, Despicable Me 4 took advantage of a somewhat weak summer for family friendly movies and road it to the bank.

Gross: $883 Million

Critics argue that Moana 2 feels more like a straight-to-DVD movie than a theatrical release, but like Despicable Me 4, it takes advantage of a soft spot in the holiday movie window.

Disney owns three of the top four slots of 2024’s highest-grossing films, which proves that the House of Mouse is still more than capable of printing money and knowing what its fans want, even if critics and other moviegoers disagree.

Dune: Part Two

Gross: $741 Million

One of the year’s best films, Dune: Part Two is the satisfying conclusion to the movie adaptation of the acclaimed sci-fi novel.

Many wondered if it was even possible to properly bring Dune to the big screen, but director Denis Villeneuve proved it was possible. In fact, he has fans eagerly awaiting the next entry in the franchise, as Dune: Messiah is currently in the works.

Wicked

Gross: $634 Million

Two decades after its debut, Wicked finally makes its way to the big screen with Cynthia Ervo and Ariana Grande in leading roles.

While some may scoff at the decision to split the movie into two parts, it’s proving to be a profitable one. Plus, Cynthia Ervo’s rendition of “Defying Gravity” may be the best version of the iconic song.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire

Gross: $572 Million

We’re halfway through the 2020s, and monster movies are still a major draw.

After the breakout success of 2023’s Godzilla Minus OneGodzilla X Kong: The New Empire goes for a more blockbuster approach. It may not boast the same critical success as Minus One, but it’s more than enjoyable as a summer popcorn flick.

Kung Fu Panda 4

Gross: $548 Million

Another 2024 top-grossing movie, another animated sequel.

Kung Fu Panda‘s return proves that these movies still have heart. It received better critical reception than Despicable Me 4 and helped the Kung Fu Panda franchise break the $2 billion mark in overall revenue.

Venom: The Last Dance

Gross: $476 Million

Sony couldn’t deliver with most of its Spider-Man movies, partially because they didn’t have Spider-Man in them.

The one exception is the Venom trilogy, arguably since Venom is an iconic character more than capable of carrying his own movie. While Kraven and Madame Web flopped for Sony, Venom made hundreds of millions of dollars this past year.

Mufasa: The Lion King

Gross: $476 Million

Some might ask why we needed a prequel to The Lion King, but the reality is that money talks.

Mufasa: The Lion King, like Moana 2, feels like a straight-to-DVD-type movie that shouldn’t have been released in theaters. Yet despite this, it’s the tenth highest-grossing movie of 2024. That’s an impressive feat because it was released with just three weeks left in the year.
