Comedian Trevor Noah’s Production Company Announces Video Game Competition

Day Zero Productions, The Daily Show alum Trevor Noah’s production company, announced a new climate-focused video game competition on Tuesday.

The Earth Day-inspired endeavor, called “Day Zero Games: SOLARPUNK JAM,” comes in partnership with indie game developer Anima Interactive and production company Cinereach. Other industry groups — International Game Developers Association, Black in Gaming Foundation, and Latinx in Gaming, among others — are also involved.

In a news release, the brand says its goal is to broaden awareness and involvement in the “Solarpunk movement—a DIY, countercultural approach to a more sustainable future.” They continue: “Our inaugural Solarpunk theme reflects that Day Zero itself is a reference to Cape Town, South Africa’s water crisis. The team believes that solving environmental crises will take not just warnings, but world builders brave and imaginative enough to see a better future for us all.”

Noah’s Day Zero Games aims to “connect with and support the global indie game development community. Our inaugural Solarpunk theme reflects that Day Zero itself is a reference to Cape Town, South Africa’s water crisis. The team believes that solving environmental crises will take not just warnings, but world builders brave and imaginative enough to see a better future for us all.”

Winning creators will walk away with a $10,000 prize, as well as the chance to further develop their submissions with help from Day Zero Productions or Cinereach.

Competition Details

The competition officially kicks off at midnight on Tuesday, April 22, and runs through Saturday, May 10. Participant submissions are not accepted after 11:59 p.m. PDT on May 10. Judge deliberations will run from May 12 through May 23, with prize announcements slated for May 30.

Per the reveal, entrants must port their games to Windows, Android, or Mac, though web-based games are accepted provided they can run in-browser or without emulators or plugins. Organizers will not “accept analogue games, games created in proprietary platforms or games that require an emulator to run.”

The reveal cites four specific criteria that judges will use to determine winners:

  • Compelling mechanics and core game loop;
  • Creativity and artfulness;
  • Entertainment value;
  • Incorporation of the climate themes and integration of the Cinereach workshop toolkit principles.
