The Great Rodent Reckoning Has Arrived.
You’ve heard of World War I. You’ve heard of World War II. But you probably missed the most crucial conflict in all of history: The Rat War.
WAR RATS: The Rat em Up wants to fix that, one skirmish at a time.
Developed with a sort of chaotic charm and an art style to match, War Rats puts you in the boots of a scrappy resistance fighting against an onslaught of cybernetically enhanced rats. The Techno Rats have driven your kind to the brink, and this is your last stand. It all takes place in a single, glorious lane of battle.
What Even Is War Rats?

Imagine a MOBA. Now, remove all the other lanes, blend in a shot of Command & Conquer, a splash of tower defense, and throw in a hefty scoop of roguelike progression. Stir until the scent of cheese wafts through your monitor.
That is the smell of war.
You must become the rat to destroy the rat.
It’s a one-lane war zone where your rat soldiers march down the path toward enemy turrets and Techno Rats. You don’t control them directly, but you can decide when to spawn some units and where to plop down defenses and resources. The rat you do control can have two weapons, so you can help your rats push to the enemy base. The entire loop thrives on risk and reward; rack up points during the round, spend them wisely — or don’t — and save them for the battlefield. The points, called CHz, are used for permanent upgrades and in battle.
Tactical Cheese and Rodent Grit

The loop can be fast, tough, and strategic. The roguelike elements add a way to help progress. There’s a surprising depth here under the cheesy yet gore-filled exterior, and just enough grit to keep things feeling desperate.
Even in its early access state, War Rats feels confident in what it’s doing. The art looks cartoonish and fits the vibe. The soundtrack needs some help. It has one track that plays, and it sounds like something out of Mick Gordon’s DOOM soundtrack. The first big update solved a lot of my earlier gripes and got me back into action.
Should You Join the Rat War?

If you like weird genre hybrids that aren’t afraid to be aggressively themselves, War Rats is worth a look. It’s got a stronger bite than you’d expect from a little rat.
War never changes, but it can be unique. I’m excited to see what this game can become in the future. wootusart Industries has injected so much personality into the game.
