Every now and then, a classic video game will release and change the industry.

We’re talking about all-time greats in the world of video games that blew us away. These are the games we remember from our childhood and still play today.

Can you correctly guess the years these games came out?

Pong

The game that started it all.

Pong is regarded as the first ever successful video game, helping to kickstart a fledging industry.

If your parents are like mine, they reminisced about playing Pong for the first time when they brought the Atari out of the attic.

Pac-Man

Originally called Puck ManPac-Man took arcades by storm.

Its concept was simple: avoid four ghosts chasing you through a maze while you attempt to eat all the pellets. The more you eat, the higher your score.

This simple concept, as it turns out, became highly addictive.

Donkey Kong

Before Mario was known as Mario, he was Jujmpman, the playable character in the beloved classic Donkey Kong.

While many attribute Super Mario Bros. as the birth of the platformer genre, Donkey Kong introduced the ability for players to jump.

One of the most iconic games of all time, Tetris is the game that has carved out a legacy in the industry for four decades.

Whether it’s the original release or a modern reimagining, Tetris remains as enjoyable as ever.

Super Mario Bros.

The original Super Mario Bros. for the NES helped establish home consoles as a premier way to play video games following the industry crash of 1983.

Nintendo’s iconic platformer is one of the best-selling games of all time, introducing millions to the world of gaming.

Mega Man 2

From its iconic score to the challenging gameplay, Mega Man 2 is one of the best games we’ll ever play.

It improves on its predecessor in every possible way, offering better graphics, new power-ups, and far superior gameplay.

SimCity – 1989

I may have been just two years old when SimCity was released, but you better believe when I came of age, I lost my life to this game.

While the city-builder genre has, unfortunately, moved on from the once iconic series, modern releases such as the Cities: Skylines games owe everything they have to SimCity.

Super Mario Bros. 3

If the first Super Mario Bros. helped establish Nintendo and the NES console as a force to be reckoned with, then Super Mario Bros. 3 reinforced that fact. While it didn’t sell as many copies as the 1985 release, it’s arguably a superior game.

Japan was lucky enough to get their hands on Super Mario Bros. 3 years before the rest of us.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Alongside the rise of Nintendo, Sega established themselves as a worthy competitor.

1991’s Sonic the Hedgehog is a platformer, like the Mario franchise. One key difference is the game’s impressive graphics, taking full advantage of the more powerful Sega Genesis. Sonic also had a cool factor that Mario doesn’t, thanks to his blazing fast speed as you traverse through the platforming levels.

DOOM

While Nintendo and Sega competed in the platformer genre, id Software was ready to revolutionize the entire gaming industry with DOOM.

DOOM wasn’t the original first-person shooter, nor was it id Software’s first FPS. Still, DOOM paved the way for the future of the genre and gaming in general.

Pokémon Red and Blue

While Pokémon Red and Blue did not arrive in North America until 1998, their impact was felt immediately.

Nintendo knew it had struck gold when it launched a multimedia empire in the late ’90s. By the time Pokémon arrived in North America, many, including myself, were already familiar with them. We were ready to catch them all.

Final Fantasy VII

A landmark title in the RPG genre, Final Fantasy VII fully utilizes the powerful PlayStation 1 hardware, utilizing 3D graphics in ways few games had up to that point.

Combined with its iconic, memorable characters and emotional storyline, Final Fantasy VII remains one of the best in the franchise even today.
