Folks at global video game brand Xbox are biting their nails following the release of the company’s abysmal 2024 sales figures. Last year, the Microsoft subsidiary sold just 2.7 million consoles across the U.S. and 290,000 in Europe. Conversely, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) sold nearly 10 million of its competing console, the PlayStation 5, in the last few months of 2024 alone. Xbox’s 2024 estimates show their worst annual performance in the console’s history, with figures even lower than their sub-par 4.35 million consoles sold in 2023.
PlayStation 5 sales have, overall, outpaced those of Xbox’s Series X and Series S. The former just recently closed its best holiday season ever, bringing to-date sales to a whopping 74.9 million consoles worldwide. Comparatively, combined Xbox Series X and Series S sales estimates show a paltry 30 million.
Sony Interactive Entertainment also reported games and console sales jumped 16% year-over-year, adding that over 40% of purchases made last quarter were to PlayStation 5 newcomers. Their success doesn’t stop there; SIE also welcomed 6 million more monthly users to its PlayStation Network (PSN), growing from 123 million per month to 129 million. These optimistic figures come after PSN just made headlines for its massive 24-hour-long outage, ruining the weekend for tens of millions of console gamers.
In a recent call, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki credited two recent game releases — family-friendly platformer Astro Bot and live-service multiplayer title Helldivers 2 — as instrumental in the brand’s recent success. The brand is also hyping up its upcoming releases, including first-party titles Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2, as well as the long-awaited third-party release from Rockstar, Grand Theft Auto VI, slated for release later this year. Moving forward, SIE hopes to prioritize content that further broadens its reach, including more titles aimed at younger gamers.
