ZeniMax Online Studios president stepping down after layoffs

Video game publisher and Microsoft subsidiary ZeniMax is losing its president.

In a new post on X (formerly Twitter), the studio behind The Elder Scrolls Online announced that its president, Matt Firor, will depart the company later this month.

News of his departure comes just one day after Microsoft announced expansive layoffs and cancellations, including the discontinuation of ZeniMax Online Studios’ long-in-development MMORPG. Firor, who first joined ZeniMax Online Studios in 2007, is among 9,000 Microsoft employees worldwide who were laid off on Wednesday, July 2.

Many of the parent company’s cuts impacted Xbox game studios; other now-discontinued works include the Rare-developed Everwild and the long-hyped Perfect Dark reboot.

The studio’s social media post is presented as a letter to fans from Firor himself:

“After more than 18 years leading ZeniMax Online Studios, I’ll be stepping away later this month. The studio and The Elder Scrolls Online will be in great hands under the direction of new Studio Head, Jo Burba along with Executive Producer, Susan Kath and Game Director, Rich Lambert. Together, this leadership team has spearheaded many of ESO’s biggest ideas and expansions and will continue to make this game something we’re all proud of. While I won’t be working on the game anymore, I will be cheering you on and adding to the thousands of hours I’ve already spent in-game. There are many more stories to be told, adventures to be had, and I know this amazing community will carry that shared legacy and success forwards.

Thank you,

From Matt.”

Microsoft’s digital entertainment division, Microsoft Gaming, acquired ZeniMax in March 2021 for just over $8 billion.
