15 movies so bad, they’re actually good

There are plenty of good movies that are great, just like there are plenty of bad movies that are unwatchable.

Every now and then, though, we find a movie that’s so bad that it’s actually good.

Whether it’s due to unintentional humor, a nonsensical plot that defies logic, or even a guilty pleasure, these are the movies that are so bad, yet so good to watch.

Hackers

Yes, the film is obviously cheaply made and incredibly stupid. Yet that only makes it more endearing.

The film flirts with being a parody, never intending to be anywhere close to good, and as a result, that helps give it a certain appeal that makes it enjoyable.

Van Helsing

One thing that goes against Van Helsing is how seriously it takes itself.

It’s nowhere close to being art, but it succeeds as a mindless popcorn flick, and sometimes that’s more than good enough.

The Core

There’s something about the late ’90s/early 2000s era disaster movies that makes them shockingly enjoyable.

They present themselves as serious, legitimate films, yet the premise of The Core is that you’re drilling to the center of the Earth to restart the planet’s core.

Spice World

Given the popularity of the Spice Girls during their peak, a movie was all but given.

It’s surprisingly self-aware of how bad the film is and is surprisingly campy. It may not be a good movie, but they had fun making it.

Batman & Robin

Yes, it’s the film that nearly killed the Batman franchise, but over time, it somehow enjoyed an audience reassessment.

It’s still pretty bad, but there are so many terrible puns that you can’t help but laugh. You can’t tell me that you haven’t cracked even the softest laugh or two at Arnold’s puns.

Last Action Hero

Speaking of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Last Action Hero deserved better. Maybe critics and audiences weren’t ready for it back in 1993.

I wouldn’t call it a bad movie, per se, but it certainly didn’t light the world on fire. However, it’s a fun, satirical look at the action genre that has only gotten better with time. Plus, Charles Dance is the villain, and you can’t go wrong with Charles Dance.

Miami Connection

Speaking of bad movies being ahead of their time, Miami Connection has also undergone a critical reassessment, especially in the wake of movies like Kung Fu Hustle.

Let’s be honest here: Miami Connection is still very much a bad movie, but it’s a bad movie that’s fun, packed with style, and has so many iconic quotes that you can’t help but have a good time.

Showgirls

Speaking of reassessments, Showgirls has gone from a bona fide disaster that destroyed careers to a beloved cult classic.

Look, it’s still a bad movie with bad performances and a bad story, but it’s like a car wreck: you just can’t look away.

Suburban Commando

If you tell me Hulk Hogan is playing an interstellar warrior that helps a dweeb played by Christopher Lloyd find self-confidence, then you better believe I’m in.

Movies used to be art, man. Now they’re all commercialized and generic. What happened to the industry I loved?

Suburban Sasquatch

Suburban Sasquatch walked so Sharknado could run.

Here’s the premise: a bloodthirsty Bigfoot goes on a killing spree in a suburban park. I mean, if you sit down to watch Suburban Sasquatch expecting anything but that, then I don’t know what to say.

The Velocipastor

The success of Sharknado in 2013 unsurprisingly paved the way for even more over-the-top movie premises. One of which was 2017’s The Velocipastor, featuring pastor Doug Jones, who turns into a velociraptor when he’s angry.

It’s important to note that the 2010s were filled with similar over-the-top movies seeing mainstream releases, most notably Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. However, the Velocipastors, Suburban Sasquatches, and Sharknadoes of the world were the perfect balance of craziness, low budget, and not taking themselves seriously to make them actually enjoyable.

Nothing But Trouble

Speaking of all-star casts, Nothing But Trouble is what happens when you let Dan Akroyd get weird.

We’ve seen far better comedies from Akroyd, Chevy Chase, and John Candy, but this one didn’t land with audiences, though some argue that it was just, like several other films on this list, ahead of its time.

The Room

The very definition of a movie so bad it’s good.

Tommy Wiseau’s “masterpiece” makes absolutely no sense, and the man cannot act, but it’s just so unintentionally funny.

If The Room isn’t the textbook example of a movie so bad that it’s good, then it’s most certainly Plan 9 from Outer Space.

The constant mistakes, from seeing the shadows of microphones in shots, countless continuity errors, and poor creative choices, have helped make the infamous sci-fi film an unintentional comedy and, dare I say it, a good movie.

Excalibur

On paper, Excalibur should have worked: an all-star cast, beautiful cinematography, and all the right things working in its favor.

So what happened? The script. It’s just so bad that it’s cringey and, at times, difficult to watch.
