It’s a big year for video game adaptations already, but it appears there’s one more project in the works at Amazon Prime Video.

According to Variety, a live-action interpretation of the paranormal episodic adventure game Life is Strange is currently in development.

The End of the F***ing World writer Charlie Covell will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Square Enix, Story Kitchen, and LuckyChap, with Amazon MGM Studios, will produce.

Story Kitchen — an entertainment label launched in 2022 by Mike Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Sonic the Hedgehog film producer Dmitri M. Johnson — specializes in what it calls “Franchise Farming,” or adapting games and “non-traditional IPs” into silver-screen and small-screen productions.

Australian actress Margot Robbie and husband Tom Ackerley founded LuckyChap in 2014 alongside film producers Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr.

“Story Kitchen has always believed that ‘Life is Strange’ deserved to be more than just a game—it’s a cultural touchstone,” said Johnson and Goldberg of Story Kitchen. “After a decade-long journey, we’re honored to be bringing this beloved story to Amazon MGM alongside our incredible partners at Square Enix, our brilliant showrunner/writer Charlie Covell, and the amazing team at LuckyChap. Together, this thoughtfully assembled dream team is ready to share Life is Strange with the world in an entirely new way!”

“It’s a huge honor to be adapting ‘Life Is Strange’ for Amazon MGM Studios,” showrunner Covell told Variety. “I am a massive fan of the game, and I’m thrilled to be working with the incredible teams at Square Enix, Story Kitchen and LuckyChap. I can’t wait to share Max and Chloe’s story with fellow players and new audiences alike.”

About ‘Life is Strange’

Set in October 2013, the first entry in the Life is Strange franchise follows angsty 18-year-old photographer Max Caulfield as she attends Blackwell Academy in Arcadia Bay, Oregon. In the middle of a lecture, Max experiences a frightening and realistic vision of a powerful tornado heading straight to town. With the help of her blue-haired BFF Chloe, Caulfield must simultaneously understand her new capabilities and unravel the mysterious disappearance of fellow Blackwell pupil Rachel Amber.

Like a contemporary choose-your-own-adventure book, Life is Strange incorporates in-game consequences based on player decisions. With this “butterfly effect,” players’ chosen dialogue and environmental interactions can have lasting impacts on plot trajectory. When gamers make a move that changes how their adventure unravels, an animated warning appears in the top-left corner: “This action will have consequences.” Next to the message, a hand-drawn butterfly flaps its wings.

The popularity of the first Life is Strange paved the way for the 2017 prequel Life is Strange: Before the Storm, as well as series-tangential spin-offs like The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, released in 2018. Meanwhile, Life is Strange 2 and Life is Strange: True Colors ushered in fresh, equally surreal adventures with new characters.

The IP’s most recent release, Life is Strange: Double Exposure, was released in October 2024 and returns to now-adult Max Caulfield as she unpacks yet another mystery.

“We’ve been huge fans of the visionary Charlie Covell for years, so partnering with them on the adaptation of Life is Strange is truly a dream come true,” LuckyChap told Variety. “Charlie is an exceptional steward of revered IP, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have them at the helm of such an original, beloved and culturally resonant video game. We’re also deeply grateful to be collaborating with our friends at Amazon MGM Studios, Story Kitchen and Square Enix and can’t wait to bring Chloe, Max, and Arcadia Bay to life.”
