TBH: Task Bar Hero hits player peak despite mixed reviews, controversies

Free-to-play idle roleplaying game TBH: Task Bar Hero is still within its release week, and already, the pixel-art RPG is reaching new heights. According to new SteamDB data, Nugem Studio and Tesseract Studio’s TBH: Task Bar Hero hit an all-time player peak of 143,508 on Sunday morning, taking the eighth spot on Steam’s most-played games by daily active users, or DAUs.

While the idle adventure’s player base has steadily increased since its launch on Wednesday, May 27, its “Mixed” Steam review average stands to overshadow the game’s otherwise impressive chart performance. Of the game’s 659 English-language reviews, just 60 percent are positive, with much of the negative feedback citing performance issues and spyware concerns.

Some reviewers allege premium items they’ve purchased have disappeared from their accounts, while others say the game’s Steam Market trading makes it a target for bots.

“[T]erms and conditions and permissions required are a joke, basically spyware,” writes one user.

“Game full of bots which lags the server and makes it unplayable for anyone else,” adds another.

One particular review leads with some sage advice: “If the product is free then you are the product.”

TBH: Task Bar Hero‘s controversies don’t stop there, either. Just hours before hitting its new player peak, Task Bar Hero‘s team shared a critical message via Steam, threatening alleged cheaters with a permanent ban. “The operations team is currently in the process of sanctioning users detected for cheating,” the post reads. “If cheating behavior is detected 2 or more times, the user will receive a permanent ban from TBH : Task Bar Hero without prior notice.”

“Furthermore, we have opened an appeal channel for users who believe they have been unfairly banned,” the game’s crew writes, sharing a link to a player survey.

About ‘TBH: Task Bar Hero’

Nugem and Tesseract Studios’ free-to-play idle game, TBH: Task Bar Hero, is billed on Steam as “the ultimate tiny idle RPG that fits right into your taskbar.” Like other incremental “desktop companions,” Task Bar Hero gameplay continues robotically, allowing players to farm resources, unlock items, and battle enemies from their desktop. “Just leave it running on your screen — your pixel heroes will automatically gather loot and grow stronger on their own […] Your adventure keeps going automatically, even when you’re away.”

TBH launched just a few days ago, so we’re likely to hear more from the operations team (here’s hoping, anyway). If you’re a concerned player, keep an eye on the game’s Steam announcements for developer updates as they become available.
