CD Projekt Red’s tech-dystopia RPG Cyberpunk 2077 has come a long, long way since its rocky launch in 2020, and a new post from the Polish video game company confirms it. On Friday morning, CD Projekt Red confirmed a new milestone for Cyberpunk 2077: 40 million units sold.
Official Cyberpunk 2077 social media accounts shared the news across multiple platforms. “Night City population: 40 million dreamers,” the short-but-sweet post on Bluesky begins. “Thank you all for helping us reach this amazing milestone!” The post features a sleek, celebratory shot of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty character Solomon Reed (Idris Elba) confidently sitting on a couch, holding a firearm in his right hand. Highlighter-yellow text positioned in front of Reed reads, “40 MILLION COPIES SOLD.”

Cyberpunk 2077 announced 30 million units sold in a similar social media post in November 2024; the studio celebrated 35 million units sold a year later in November 2025, likely aided by its Nintendo Switch 2 launch. If I were to rely on my pattern recognition to guesstimate when it might reach 40 million, I’d probably say November ’26, but interest in Cyberpunk 2077 seems to have accelerated over the last seven months.
The IP isn’t exclusive to gamers anymore, a strategy likely contributing to its increasing popularity. News regarding the next season of Netflix’s critically acclaimed animated action hit, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, was released earlier this week, including the addition of veteran VA Clancy Brown (SpongeBob SquarePants; Detroit: Become Human) to the English-language cast.
Hype around the Cyberpunk 2077-inspired trading card game, featured earlier this year at PAX East, is also a likely contributor. Since launching on Kickstarter in March 2026, more than 50,000 individual “backers” have supported the project. Its original financial goal of $100,000 has since ballooned to over $28 million.
