Buckle up, baby! On Wednesday, I Am Your Beast developer Strange Scaffold and video game publisher Frosty Pop released their newest project, Truck-kun is Supporting Me From Another World?!, onto PC via Steam and XBOX.
Immediately following the title’s launch, the Truck-kun team headed to social media platform Bluesky to spread the word. “Truck-kun is Supporting Me from Another World?! Is OUT NOW on Steam and XBOX Series X|S,” the post begins. “Send pedestrians to another world to pay your soul debt to a buff elf girl who lives in your head in our OVA sized isekai driving game.”
“Truck-kun is an enormous leap for us into new aesthetics, genres, and gameplay mechanics,” Strange Scaffold studio head Xalavier Nelson Jr. said in a news release. “I’m so excited for folks to fall in love with Carissa and her world(s), and the way they grow, just like we have.”
In this surreal, anime-inspired adventure, players follow Carissa Ward, an eager young professional ready to begin her new gig as marketing VP — until your magic lil’ truck smashes into her, sending her consciousness to the new and fantastical world of Talinfold. After the collision, Carissa embarks on a journey back home that’s bursting with classic media tropes, anime references, and other absurd, satirical nods to both manga and real-world madness.
Bash baddies and barrel through obstacles at full speed to earn stars and XP, make some deliveries, and work to complete objectives and power up the Galactic Gate that’ll get Carissa back home. If the chaotic, vibrant, and goofy gameplay doesn’t rev your engine, the energetic ska-inspired OST from award-winning composer David Mason just might.
OK, wait — what is ‘Truck-kun’?
Truck-kun is Supporting Me From Another World?! is inspired by the “truck-kun” meme, prevalent in the popular isekai genre of anime and manga. In this fantasy subgenre, characters are (often accidentally) transported to new worlds and must work to survive. These new worlds run the gamut; protagonists can end up in action-packed medieval settings — like in Truck-kun — or peaceful “slow life” environments that offer working-class readers a kind of silly or supernatural escapism.
This long-running trope can be found in popular Western media, too, like The Wizard of Oz, Over the Garden Wall, and Space Jam. Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-nominated animated film, Spirited Away, is perhaps my personal fave (although Chihiro isn’t the victim of a trick collision).
Isekai was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in early 2024, and is defined as “a Japanese genre of science or fantasy fiction featuring a protagonist who is transported to or reincarnated in a different, strange, or unfamiliar world.”
