Onimusha: Way of the Sword sells 1m units in one day

Capcom revealed on Sunday that Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the latest entry in the label’s decades-old Onimusha franchise, is already slicing and dicing previously set sales records.

Capcom announced in a news release that total global sales of its new hack-‘n’-slash Onimusha: Way of the Sword surpassed 1 million on release day. According to new brand estimates, the long-running samurai series has sold about 10 million units since its introduction in 2001.

In Onimusha: Way of the Sword, players take on the role of sword-swinging protagonist Miyamoto Musashi in Edo-era Kyoto. With the power of the Oni at your side, lead the young samurai through fantastical, blood-spattered environments, tear through titanic opponents, and utilize the Oni Gauntlet’s powers to absorb Genma souls and grow your strength.

For Way of the Sword, Capcom “turned to none other than the late, iconic Japanese samurai movie legend Toshiro Mifune to star as the face model for this rendition of Miyamoto Musashi.”

Onimusha: Way of the Sword currently boasts an 85 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic, a critic average that’s in line with its player score of 8.7 (out of 10).

The Onimusha series leans heavily on gritty, gruesome swordplay with dark fantasy elements throughout. Master slick sword attacks to defeat monstrous fiends and explore a visually stunning rendition of Edo-era Kyoto featuring prominent shrines, temples, and other fixtures. Once-recognizable regions in this version, however, have been warped and distorted by Malice.

Capcom has released five mainline Onimusha games over the last quarter-century (wild!), with Way of the Sword marking the series’ first new title in 20 years. The franchise’s cult following has also led to a handful of spinoffs and irreverent merch like lighters and pachinko slot machines. Paramount Pictures even planned a live-action adaptation in the early aughts, though delays and other factors pushed the project to the back burner before its eventual cancellation.

At the time of writing, the series’ first two entries — 2001’s Onimusha: Warlords and 2002’s Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny — are available for purchase on PC via Steam for $9.99 and $14.99, respectively.

Pick up the Standard Edition of Onimusha: Way of the Sword today on PC via Steam,  PlayStation 5Nintendo Switch 2, and XBOX Series X for $69.99. The Deluxe Edition will run players $79.99, and the Premium Deluxe Edition, about $89.99. Try before you buy with the game’s free Steam demo.
