Nine months into 2026, and I’m exhausted, with a wallet stretched thin to match my patience. But instead of diving into a book or starting a new TV show to take the metaphorical edge off, I’ve turned to Steam’s virtually endless list of awesome and innovative indie games.
No AI, no subscription plans, no corporate slop. The cherry on top? An affordable retail price!
Independent game studios, by design, operate without C-suite oversight or shareholder suggestions, which means small-scale storytellers can untether their imaginations in a way AAA developers can’t. And because independent devs don’t have massive teams to pay or shareholders to satisfy, they can often keep game prices relatively low.
Risky, innovative narrative devices, groundbreaking visuals, and original soundtracks that’d give John Williams goosebumps — still, these impressive new indie games fit virtually every budget. Check out some of my favorites:
Dressmaker
Dressmaker, the poised and polished tailor sim from developer Cozy Lives, is drawing more eyes than a bright dress at a funeral. Too soon? Sorry, Prudence…
In this riveting, story-rich job sim, players serve as a charming city’s new dressmaker, dreaming up and constructing dresses to fulfill townspeople’s formalwear orders. Frills, lace, crushed velvet, big bows, appliqués, and more await in your stacked fabric and accessory collections.
Super-sweet customer? Make sure that dress is up to snuff by adding ornate details that fit their occasion. Rude client? Maaaaaaybe you can take some creative liberties on that formal gown they ordered. Oops.
Dressmaker is out now on Steam for $14.99, but players can secure a 10 percent post-launch markdown by buying the game before Monday, September 28.

The fourth entry in Joeveno’s BRAZILIAN DRUG DEALER series dropped just last week, and already, the game has amassed nearly 500 reviews and holds a “Very Positive” player average. This chaotic, fast-paced boomer shooter sends players through “Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Salvador, Hell and even Heaven,” each locale reminiscent of Quake‘s labyrinthine stages.
BRAZILIAN DRUG DEALER 4 is available on PC via Steam right now for just $4.99, but you can nab it for even less (robbery, maybe?) with the introductory discount.
Grail
Grail is a fantastical autobattler deckbuilder from indie developer-publisher Sokpop Collective where your deck plays automatically. Upgrades, however, are all on you. Players can add skill-boosting stickers to enchant their favorite cards and take down opponents with powerful and magical abilities. Explore a collection of cosmetics, over 250 unique cards, and more than 100 applicable traits.

The Loopler
Those toy racetracks we had as kids don’t stand a chance against addictive roguelike The Loopler, a slot car-based deckbuilder set on a metric ton of looping tracks. Choose which cards you’d like to play, place your gates, nab charms, and watch your car go brrrr as you trigger massive multipliers and send your score to the sky. The game’s logline urges racers to “[s]ee how far you can go in the pursuit of infinity.”

Shroom and Gloom
Shroom and Gloom, the popular fungi-inspired deckbuilder from Team Lazerbeam and publisher Devolver Digital, launched in Steam Early Access on September 10 and is still holding steady on Steam’s charts.
Bravely combat mad mushrooms and sinister spores with powerful card combos, unlockable weapons, special abilities, and virtually endless card buffs as you make your way into the heart of The Gloom. Hungry? Snack on your enemies to restore your health, but season ’em well first!
Be sure to stop and appreciate the gritty underground world’s remarkable hand-drawn visuals and slick multi-dimensional effects. No Smell-O-Vision, thankfully.
