Arcade-horror game ROLLA gets haunting new Halloween update

ROLLA, the brutal B-movie-inspired bullet hell from indie developer Tyrmä Games and publisher Pantaloon, is celebrating Halloween with a new, seasonally appropriate content update.

ROLLA‘s 1.1 Update is live now, bringing players a never-before-seen stage, a new high-stakes gameplay mode, and quality-of-life improvements. ROLLA‘s current leaderboards will also be reset as part of the update, which Pantaloon says will better “reflect the revised gameplay and balancing.”

The ROLLA team announced the content’s launch in a Steam update. “It’s Halloween, and we’re celebrating in true ROLLA style: more grabbing, more growing, ZERO table manners.

“The ROLLA 1.1 Update is live now! We’ve been listening to your feedback and serving up gameplay improvements, fixes, and a brand new challenge to feed your ever growing appetite.”

ROLLA gets new gameplay mode, QoL adjustments in 1.1 Update

In the game’s new Atomic Time Attack mode, “the only way to keep rolling is to keep eating.” Roll your meaty Katamari through each zone and pick up each and every human passerby, as each carcass adds a few oh-so-vital seconds to your in-game countdown. No humans? Uh-oh. No YOU, I fear.

For their best shot at success, the team urges players to “[b]e fast, be creative, and stay hungry.”

The studio says ROLLA‘s newest mode is accessible out of the gate; players can hop right in (or roll, really) from the game’s main menu. No in-game progression is required to access Atomic Time Attack mode, which is always good news for players who prefer arcade games’ short, high-stakes runs.

Publisher Pantaloon says that, alongside the new Atomic Time Attack, they’ve implemented some other player-suggested changes, including:

  • A helping tendril: A small tendril now highlights humans within grabbing range.
  • Bigger monster, bigger handfuls: Start with one grabbing tendril and snatch more humans at once as ROLLA grows.
  • A more balanced rampage: Reworked enemy waves and spawning, bigger growth boosts from humans, and improved pacing, particularly in the opening levels.
  • Fewer interruptions to dinner: Fixes for getting stuck after airstrikes and out-of-bounds spawning in Blood And Highway.

Pantaloon says that, in addition to todays’ 1.1 Update, many of ROLLA‘s recent post-launch adjustments have been shaped by player feedback. These include custom key bindings for more player control, dynamic and isometric camera angles with helpful zoom controls, lighting improvements, and more visible artillery.

Your mobile ball of carnage can capture enemies a little easier thanks to grabbing improvements and NPC behavior adjustments.

Players can also check objectives from the pause menu, including their R-O-L-L-A letter pickups. Don’t try to spell K-O-N-G; you won’t get very far.

ROLLA, a B-movie-inspired arcade horror game released on October 13, turns players into a navigable ball of flesh that must roll, smush, crush, and consume stationary structures and fleeing residents throughout each stage. Think Katamari Damacy, but, y’know, gross.

Cool.

Grow your score alongside your ball-o-detritus. As your ball grows and envelops increasingly large obstacles, your score will rise in tandem. Watch out for police and first responders, as their job is to end your run at all costs.

“BREAKING NEWS! Downtown is being terrorised by a rolling mass of pulsing flesh,” the game’s Steam logline warns. “Eyewitnesses describe the scene as ‘crunchy arcade destruction where survival blends with score-chasing!’. What is this creature!? What are its motives!? Is it really the villain here!? Back to you in the studio.”

Got what it takes to keep your grotesque fleshball alive? Tackle those freshly wiped leaderboards and see how far you can climb.

Roll over to Steam and pick up ROLLA for just $7.99. While you’re there, be sure to follow the game for updates and sale alerts. Good luck — you’ll need it.
