Acclaim to publish top-down roguelike shooter Die or Die

Iconic game studio Acclaim, Inc., announced Monday that it will publish Die or Die, a new hand-drawn roguelike shooter from Spain-based indie studio Ao Norte. The title, which Acclaim showed off last week at L.A. Comic Con, is expected to launch on PC via Steam and consoles sometime in 2027.

Acclaim shared the news with a Die or Die trailer highlighting the offbeat adventure’s coolest features, including remarkable sketchbook visuals, back-breaking combat, and satisfying roguelike progression, among other elements.

Die or Die‘s frenetic gameplay and hand-drawn, vibrant visuals evoke memories of zany 90s morning cartoons. Think Pizza Tower. No cereal needed here, but I won’t “yuck” your “yum.”

Die or Die sends players through hectic, obstacle-packed stages searching for collectible dice, which they’ll later spend to unlock abilities or vanquish threats, called “bummers.” Ultimately, players can expect to do three things: “Roll. Die. Repeat.”

“The whole Ao Norte team is so excited about this partnership!,” Ao Norte producer and art director Rubén Calles said in a news release. “Getting to work with Acclaim will definitely put Die or Die among the most renowned games ever. Not a single bummer in our roadmap, Our dice roll says it’s just over the top powers and full throttle towards success for us!”

Marc Anthony Rodriguez, Acclaim’s publishing director, shared a statement about the influence that wacky, early-90s animation had on both the publisher and developer, and how they shaped this project. “Growing up, shows like Aaahh!!! Real Monsters and Liquid Television had a wild, weird, unapologetic energy you couldn’t find anywhere else. Die or Die captures that same cartoon chaos, which makes it a perfect fit for Acclaim.

“That’s what we’re about: games with attitude, personality, and immediate fun.”

In Die or Die, players become “Lil’ Demon,” an overworked cab driver burning the metaphorical candle at both ends. Poor guy’s exhausted, and frankly? Felt.

The disillusioned Lil’ Demon wants to ditch this gig, nd all he knows, but as many mortals know all too well, life has other plans.

Check out some of Die or Die‘s most alluring gameplay elements:

  • Roll the Dice. Collect and use dice to activate crazy abilities, buy super weapons, or destroy bummers. Your rolls shape your build, your approach to each level, and even level layout;
  • Beware the Bummers. In-game threats, endearingly called “bummers,” turn combat on its head; gigantify enemies, drastically lose speed, or play “the floor is lava”;
  • Build or Bust. Spend your dice wisely, because every one you invest in wiping bummers means one less for buffs;
  • Five Worlds to Conquer. Fight your way to the coast across five increasingly hazardous worlds;
  • Run, Shoot, Dodge. Clear every enemy from each level to move on to the next. The team warns: “Luck gets you started, but skill keeps you alive.”
