Vibrant city-builder ShantyTown launches new update

ShantyTown, Kinephantom Games’ and Silk Softworks’ offbeat city-building game released earlier this year, is getting a comprehensive new content update that brings quality-of-life improvements, all-new cosmetics, and atmospheric adjustments to urban planners.

The new 1.06.01 update, shared in a Steam announcement, adds dozens of new items across 11 new categories. Some items, previously only found inside buildings, “can now be placed freely.” These items will “unlock alongside their respective shops and appear under the ‘Shop Items’ creative category.”

The ShantyTown update also improves item-stacking, a welcome improvement to one of the game’s core construction mechanics. Now, builders can pile buildings and create even more elaborate, dense neighborhoods.

Developers also addressed several visual bugs, removed windowed modes on handhelds, and added locations for any missed unlockables. The free ShantyTown demo, available on Steam now, also got a facelift; it now features the Welcome Pier, Shrine, and Lighthouse maps.

Check out the complete update details, straight from Silk Softworks’ Erik Rempen:

  • “70+ interior items across 11 new categories: tems [sic] that previously only appeared inside buildings can now be placed freely. They unlock alongside their respective shops and appear under the “Shop Items” creative category.
  • “Better item stacking: Collision changes allow more items to be stacked on top of one another for denser, more detailed builds.
  • “Quality of life fixes: Missed unlocks now show where to find them, windowed modes have been removed on handhelds, and several visual bugs have been fixed.
  • “Refreshed demo: The free demo has been updated with post-launch improvements and now features the Welcome Pier, Shrine and Lighthouse maps.
  • “Building without constraints: Place and stack objects freely to create layered neighbourhoods that feel personal rather than perfectly planned.
  • “Dense, detailed locations: Build across 20 distinct locations filled with their own objects, atmosphere and small visual surprises.
  • “A responsive atmosphere: A changing day-night cycle is accompanied by an adaptive soundtrack from vaporwave artist Macroblank.
  • “Photography & exploration: Finish a location, photograph your creation, and add it to your in-game dossier.
  • “Creative Mode: Return to locations and build freely using unlocked objects, or use the Blankspace to create larger custom compositions without the usual restrictions.
  • “ShantyTown is also Steam Deck Verified.“

About offbeat urban city-builder ‘ShantyTown’

In this adorable diorama-builder, players must construct unconventional structures across a ton of quirky, interactive locations. Fit small ramen shops, potted plants, neon signage, and power lines in super-tight spaces, stacking stores and shops according to each one’s unique utility needs.

ShantyTown doesn’t require players to worry about traditional city-planning concerns; this puzzle-like indie prioritizes decorations, lighting, and utilities, “encouraging players to think about balance and atmosphere rather than efficiency.”
