Spotify, The Game Awards release game-inspired Spotify Singles

Move over, Wrapped! On Thursday, popular music and podcast streaming platform Spotify revealed it had joined forces with The Game Awards to bring listeners a handful of new game-inspired tracks from popular artists. In a news release, the company shared it had commissioned Singles from artists “who are also avid gamers” — British singer-songwriter Labrinth, post-hardcore artist Bilmuri, rock group Evanescence, and synthwave trio Gunship.

“Having the right song soundtrack your moves can make all the difference when gaming,” Spotify writes in its latest news release. “That’s why we’ve teamed up with The Game Awards, airing live tonight, to put a spotlight on the composers and songs that define the gaming experience.”

“To get in the game,” the company continues, “we’ve commissioned three brand-new Spotify Singles from artists who are also avid gamers. They’ve each put their unique spin on iconic gaming tracks, which are available to stream today exclusively on Spotify. Labrinth reimagines a classic from the world of Sonic, Bilmuri offers a fresh interpretation of a song from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Evanescence and GUNSHIP join forces for a rendition of a track from Devil May Cry.”

The Spotify Singles program, which the brand introduced back in 2016, brings contemporary artists to Spotify studios around the world to “reimagine one of their existing tracks or pay homage to their musical heroes by covering a song of their choice.” The platform also revealed it is among The Game Awards’ event sponsors, supporting the ceremony’s ‘Best Score and Music’ category.

Spotify’s news release includes brief but sentimental statements from contributing artists. Singer-songwriter Labrinth touched on his lifelong love of gaming and the project itself. “Sonic was such a formative part of my gaming upbringing that making a Spotify Single with Sonic at the heart was an amazing opportunity. I hope fellow Sonic fans check it out along with the amazing music created by Bilmuri and Evanescence with GUNSHIP.”

“Gaming has always been a huge part of my life, and recording a track based on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a super-cool experience,” said Bilmuri. “Some of my strongest memories of music come from the games I play, and I wanted to convey that energy with this Spotify Single.”

“We’ve been looking for an excuse to work with GUNSHIP for too long and couldn’t be more excited about this dark new version of ‘Afterlife,’” confessed Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee. “Being a part of the Devil May Cry series has been an honor and too much fun. See you at The Game Awards!”

The Game Awards 2025

It’s December, and that means awards season is in full swing. The Game Awards, led by games journalist and longtime TV emcee Geoff Keighley, is no exception. The Game Awards, founded by Keighley in 2014, is “a nod to the best developers, players, and cultural figures in the space.” The Game Awards seeks to recognize industry excellence — both creative and technical — while “honoring those who positively impact the community and shape the future of the medium.”

“The Game Awards is such a big celebration of gaming culture, and we felt it was the perfect moment to celebrate the composers, artists, and soundtracks that make video games so immersive,” Spotify Music and Marketing Partnerships Lead Alex Freeman shared. “Through this partnership we wanted to give back to the fans who are at the heart of it all through the three amazing new Spotify Singles.”

Spotify also shared a statement from Keighley: “Video game music is the heartbeat of our industry, and partnering with Spotify lets us celebrate it on the world’s biggest audio stage. We’re thrilled to have Spotify lean in like this to not only celebrate but also amplify and accelerate the appreciation of some of this year’s best video game music.”
