Nintendo’s quirky life-sim Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is getting its own Nintendo Direct presentation, the brand announced on Monday. Nintendo shared news of the game-focused Direct via its social media channels and Nintendo Today! smart-device app, a medium the global gaming brand has increasingly utilized to share big news. The Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Nintendo Direct will air this Thursday, January 29, at 6 a.m. PST/9 a.m. EST.
The Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Direct will reportedly run for about 20 minutes. The game has no release date beyond a previously teased Spring 2026 window, but if Nintendo’s past title-focused Direct presentations are any indication, fans might get the launch date they’ve been waiting for.
This is the second Nintendo Direct event in just seven days; on Sunday, January 25, Nintendo aired a five-minute announcement focused on its upcoming The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. In the Direct, Nintendo shared a teaser trailer introducing fan-favorite characters Yoshi and Birdo to the Nintendo- and Illumination-animated cinematic universe. The film will hit theaters on April 1, two days earlier than the previously confirmed April 3 date.
About ‘Tomodachi Life’
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, announced during a Nintendo Direct in March 2025, is the long-awaited sequel to 2014’s Tomodachi Life, a lighthearted and absurdist social sim set on an island bursting with Mii residents. Players begin by making a “lookalike” version of themselves using the in-game character creator. As part of their island adventures, “islanders” can mingle with other Miis, discover new foods, build or break relationships, participate in minigames, and more.
“On a small island floating in the sea, Mii characters live their own carefree lives,” begins Nintendo’s game synopsis. “You’re in charge of this island, so create anyone you’d like to live here as Mii characters, like ones based on friends, family and even yourself. Then, choose their personality, voice, and help your Mii characters enjoy their island life however they see fit. You can see what’s on their minds, help them solve problems, watch them interact, cultivate their friendships and more.”
Tomodachi Life was released in North America in June 2014 for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS. The handhelds’ local and online capabilities, such as SpotPass and StreetPass, made the already social game even more interactive.

Tune into the official Nintendo of America YouTube channel or the Nintendo Today! smart-device app to watch the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Nintendo Direct when it airs this Thursday, January 29, at 6 a.m. PST/9 a.m. EST.
