One of the best features of the Nintendo Switch 2 is the addition of GameCube games for Nintendo Switch Online.
From day one, Nintendo has promised and delivered a healthy mix of classics like Super Mario Sunshine and Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. We also have cult classics like F-Zero GX and SoulCalibur II. There are even plans for two Pokémon games to eventually make their way to the GameCube library: Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.
One franchise that was conspicuously absent, however, was Metroid. Then again, there was a presumed reason for this. Nintendo released a wonderful remaster of Metroid Prime in 2023. Why would they bother bringing back the original and its poorly dated controls to Nintendo Switch Online? Clearly, Nintendo has other plans for the Metroid Prime trilogy following the release of Metroid Prime 4, right? About that…
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is reportedly coming to Nintendo Switch Online in its original GameCube form

In an apparent leak by Walmart.com (Edit: the source page has been updated, but the above image was taken from there at the time of writing), a new page for the Nintendo Switch 2 showcases some GameCube games coming to Nintendo Switch Online: Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Pikmin 2, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
The Wind Waker has been available on Nintendo Switch Online since the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, so its inclusion here isn’t surprising. The same cannot be said for Pikmin 2 and Metroid Prime 2, however. Not only have they not been officially announced, but Metroid Prime 2 has also been a frequent subject of remaster rumors for the Nintendo Switch over the years. Following the release and success of Metroid Prime Remastered, it was widely reported and speculated that remasters for Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption were on the way. Here we are, three years later, and all we have to show for it is this leak.
Don’t get me wrong; I’m happy that we’ll be able to play Metroid Prime 2 (and hopefully Metroid Prime 3) on modern consoles soon. It’s just weird to see them not give it the remaster treatment. At the very least, an overhaul of the controls would be welcome. There is hope, though. Pikmin 2 is readily available for Nintendo Switch 2 through the Pikmin 1 +2 bundle originally released for the Nintendo Switch in 2023. Whether or not Nintendo follows through on that remains to be seen.
Never say never, but for those hoping for that shiny new Metroid Prime 2 remaster, it’s not looking good.
