Despite fans’ excitement for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, SEGA said in a recent financial report that its 3D kart-racing game failed to meet company sales expectations. SEGA parent company Sega Sammy Holdings Inc.‘s investor presentation — dated Nov. 7 but making the rounds again — claims that, despite selling more than 1 million copies globally, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds “did not meet [SEGA’s] expectations.” Haruki Satomi, President and Group CEO, Representative Director, SEGA SAMMY HOLDINGS Inc., explained more in the report:
Now, I’d like to talk about Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
It has received high ratings, scoring over 80 on Metascoreat “Metacritic” and earning an “Overwhelmingly Positive*1” rating on Steam’s customer reviews.
We recently announced that worldwide cumulative sales have surpassed 1 million units. However, initial performance did not meet our expectations, and we are aiming to sell approximately another 1 million units within this fiscal year. We aim to sustain long-term sales by encouraging players to enjoy the game over time through the continued support of the title including ongoing release of additional downloadable content.
According to the presentation, “more than 95%” of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds reviews are “Positive” across all languages. SEGA’s cited scores are “as of early November 2025,” and reflect total sales figures for physical units, digital sales, and “sales across all platforms where the game is available.”
SEGA isn’t done with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds yet
The quirky, collaborative kart-racing game hit the million-unit milestone back in October 2025, and despite stagnating sales. SEGA isn’t shunning Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds anytime soon. “We aim to sustain long-term sales by encouraging players to enjoy the game over time through the continued support of the title including ongoing release of additional downloadable content,” Satomi elaborated. SEGA says it aims to sell another 1 million copies within this fiscal year ending March 2026.

Per its presentation, the SEGA parent company says it expects “long-term sales through continued provision of additional downloadable content and IP collaborations.” Additionally, SEGA will expand what the write-up calls a “transmedia rollout.”
” … for Sonic, in addition to product merchandising like toys and apparel, we are also seeing cases of collaborations with other companies’ strong IPs, as well as providing promotional support leveraging Sonic’s recognition and popularity.”
SEGA’s financial report includes robust rollout schedule
Sega Sammy then says it plans to pump up merchandising endeavors for its other IPs, including Persona, Like a Dragon, and Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! feat. Hatsune Miku. The brand’s included rollout schedule also references older IPs like Virtua Fighter, Crazy Taxi, and more:

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds launched worldwide on Sept. 25, 2025, for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, GOG, and Epic. The game’s Nintendo Switch 2 edition dropped on the Nintendo eShop on Dec. 4, 2025. Nintendo Switch 2 users can pick up a physical copy of the game beginning March 26, 2026.
