Resident Evil Requiem named horror franchise’s fastest-selling game

Japanese game publisher Capcom has officially confirmed the record-breaking sales performance of its latest survival-horror blockbuster, Resident Evil Requiem. In an all-new press release, Capcom reveals its latest mainline Resident Evil game has surpassed 6 million units sold, making it the franchise’s fastest-selling game ever. “Capcom Co., Ltd. (Capcom) today announced that worldwide sales of Resident Evil Requiem, released on February 27, 2026, now exceed 6 million units,” the Capcom press release begins, “which is the fastest that a title in the series has reached this milestone.”

Resident Evil Requiem is the latest installment in the Resident Evil series, which offers photorealistic visuals and a deep sense of immersion,” Capcom continues. “Players can enjoy the elevated essence of the survival horror experience by the interplay between intense fear and exhilarating action, made possible by two protagonists. Going forward, Capcom plans to implement several measures, such as ongoing support and additional game content, so players can continue to enjoy the title longer.”

Capcom also notes that Requiem‘s record isn’t the only milestone worth celebrating this month. In its press release, Capcom acknowledges the beloved horror franchise’s upcoming 30th anniversary — yep, three-zero — on March 22, adding that Capcom’s got some surprises up its metaphorical sleeve. “In addition, the Resident Evil series will celebrate its 30th anniversary on March 22, 2026. Capcom is readying various plans for this anniversary to delight series fans, such as a collaboration between Universal Studios Japan and Resident Evil Requiem in 2026, and orchestral concerts in Japan, the US, and Europe.”

Capcom closes its announcement with a promise to loyal Resident Evil franchise fans. “Capcom remains firmly committed to satisfying the expectations of all users by leveraging its industry leading game development capabilities in order to create highly entertaining gameplay experiences.”

Resident Evil, originally introduced to brave audiences in 1996, has become a global phenomenon. In the three decades since protagonist Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and the menacing multinational pharma firm Umbrella Corporation first released on the OG Sony PlayStation and the Sega Saturn, cumulative game sales have exceeded 183 million units. Accounting for mainline games, series offshoots, and contemporary remakes, the franchise boasts a whopping 30 entries altogether — that’s not counting the series’ animated spinoffs, live-action flicks, mobile downloads, and more.

Requiem, much like other franchise installments, features adrenaline-pumping survival-horror gameplay, unnervingly realistic body horror, goosebump-evoking sound design, and gripping storytelling. Players must manipulate the resources at their disposal — weapons, environments, corpses, what-have-you — to survive terrifying situations and solve some seriously frustrating puzzles. Thanks to the looming threat of, y’know (gestures broadly to Raccoon City), puzzle boxes and safe-cracking attempts get much more intense.

Over on Valve-owned digital game distributor Steam, Resident Evil Requiem is sitting pretty with more than 40,000 English reviews and an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating overall. At the time of writing, SteamDB’s Resident Evil Requiem player counts estimate about 56,000 Steam users currently in-game. Data also shows Resident Evil Requiem as Steam’s sixth-best-selling title, behind Counter-Strike 2, Slay the Spire 2, Crimson Desert, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, and Apex Legends, respectively.
