Most of us nerdy peeps grew up on or around collectible card games. In my era, we had the original Pokémon craze, the arrival of Yu-Gi-Oh!, and the all-mighty Magic: The Gathering. In the 1990s, Marvel and DC had OverPower.
The game was basically abandoned and left to die, but it returned via Kickstarter in 2024. Fully funded and ready to secure your attention, OverPower is already creating cards for their game from properties like Invincible, The Walking Dead, Witchblade, and The Darkness. Two of the Outrun team members faced off in what became an epic battle. One side had The Walking Dead theme deck and the other Invincible.
I initially thought the rules would be overwhelming, but the game’s flow is logical and easy to understand. The other thing I enjoyed was not being forced to read paragraphs on the cards to see what they do. A couple of cut-and-dry sentences are straightforward and easy to understand.
The price of entry, which is better than almost every other collectible card game, completely won me over. The flow of battle feels natural and makes sense.
Big IPs are jumping on board, and the community is strong

Kayla and I hung around with the crew from OverPower, and it is very clear how much enthusiasm and passion they are putting into this game. Shawn taught us how to play, and we even tried to beat him a few days later to earn some freebies. One thing that stood out was that the characters played uniquely and felt like themselves. I used the Invincible deck, and Kayla used The Walking Dead deck. Omniman is, of course, a problem.
His One Per deck special cards really show that he is not to be trifled with. On the other side of the field, Negan stood tall, waiting to kill one of your characters and steal your resources. The One Per Deck special cards have abilities that fit the characters and just make sense. Machonne has a One Per Deck that throws her leashed zombies in the way of an attack to avoid damage.
Meanwhile, Invincible has a One Per Deck that makes him take all the damage in the whole battle. If you do not kill him, all the damage is undone, and he heals completely.
It’s an exhilarating feeling to make a character designer sweat when you both get pushed to power packs after all the special cards are used. I enjoyed my time with OverPower and really believe this game has a place in the TCG and CCG market. It feels fresh and entirely different from any other card games I’ve played before.
The partnerships they are forming with companies like Top Cow and Skybound are only the beginning. The art for these cards is so strong and very important to the team. No AI is used whatsoever. When asked about the artists, most of them were comic book artists. If you had told me I’d be able to make a deck in a card game with all these characters, I would’ve called you a liar.
OverPower is back, better than ever, and I implore you to give it a chance. The tournament scene is strong, and so is the community. Hop into their Discord and join the community. It’s easier than ever to hop in and find enjoyment in a card game. Don’t forget to pre-order the upcoming Invincible set, too!
