Calm your cordyceps — Max (previously HBO Max) is bringing Joel and Ellie back sooner than expected.
The Last of Us‘ highly-anticipated second season will air on Sunday, April 13 at 9 p.m. EST. The program will hit the streaming service at the same time. Joel and Ellie’s small-screen return takes place five years after the first season, incorporating plotlines and characters gamers likely remember from the 2020 sequel, The Last of Us Part II. The action-adventure video game adaptation’s new season will air a total of seven episodes.
For the uninitiated, the post-apocalyptic PlayStation exclusive The Last of Us hit store shelves in 2013. The project from Naughty Dog and Sony Computer Entertainment follows salt-and-pepper-haired Joel Miller as he escorts teen girl Ellie Williams through the U.S. following a deadly and widespread fungal infection. Players sneak through spooky, spore-laden environments and defend themselves from meeting the same fungal fate as their cannibalistic counterparts.
The Max smash hit’s second season comes at a time when video game adaptations are faring better than ever. The sci-fi thriller’s commercial and critical success, alongside award-winning performances from Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, and Nick Offerman, have contributed to video game adaptations‘ commanding influence in television and film.
The key? Tapping game creators like The Last of Us‘ Naughty Dog dev Neil Druckmann to ensure no sharks get jumped. Druckmann has already confirmed the development of The Last of Us Part III but says he’ll cross the show sequel bridge when he comes to it. Last week, however, showrunner Francesca Orsi confirmed the Season 4 finale will close the series.
