Alpha Dog Games reclaims independence after Microsoft closure

Alpha Dog Games, the video game studio behind mobile title Mighty Doom, is once again an independent entity. The Halifax, Nova Scotia-based studio has reemerged under founding leadership following its closure by former brand owner Microsoft. Studio founder Shawn Woods confirmed the studio’s independence and return to original owners in a new statement shared with Game Developer:

We’re incredibly excited to have the name we put so much effort and pride into building back in our hands. First and foremost, we’re grateful to Microsoft for working with us through the transition and enabling Alpha Dog Games to return to independent ownership. It means a great deal to have the opportunity to continue the studio’s legacy, which began in 2012.

Over the past several months, we’ve continued investing in the studio’s technology and development foundation, including updating key parts of the Unity-based game engine framework that Mighty Doom was built on. That gives us a strong starting point as we consider what comes next.

Alpha Dog Games, first created in 2012, was acquired by XBOX subsidiary ZeniMax Halifax in October 2019 and shut down in May 2024. Alpha Dog’s closure was among those impacted by parent company Microsoft’s recent video game studio closures, in addition to Hi-Fi Rush studio Tango Gameworks and Dishonored studio Arkane Austin. The latter was slated to collaborate with Marvel Games to produce long-teased and now-canceled Marvel’s Blade.

Woods told Game Developer that the studio isn’t quite ready to share any specifics regarding future plans, but did confirm its “currently in conversations with partners, publishers, licensors, and more.”

“The excitement surrounding Alpha Dog Games over the past few days has honestly exceeded our expectations,” Woods told Game Developer. “It has been humbling to see how much our games still mean to players around the world. The passion from the community has reminded us just how special those experiences were, and we couldn’t be more excited about what the future may hold.”
