13 movie endings that everyone hated

Nothing can ruin a promising movie more than a bad ending. We’re talking about the type of ending that makes no one happy and leaves a sour taste in all of our mouths.

Sometimes this happens with a promising movie. Other times, the film was already bad to begin with, which means its terrible ending doesn’t hit as hard.

Either way, these are the movie endings that everyone hated. Be careful, there will be spoilers!

Terminator: Salvation

You can make the argument that by now the Terminator franchise was starting to feel a little worn out, but hey, we’re finally going to the future!

It’s too bad that the entire movie had us wishing we went back to the past again. The ending is completely nonsensical, too; how in the world is someone able to successfully perform a heart transplant in the middle of the desert? John should have died.

Source Code

It’s a shame because somewhere in the mess of Source Code‘s finale is a perfect ending where everything feels satisfying. The movie kept going, however.

Instead, we’re told that this was a multiverse film with multiple universes happening simultaneously, ruining what should be the “correct” final scenes.

Sunshine

There’s a surprising amount of star power behind the scenes of Sunshine, with Danny Boyle directing and Alex Garland serving as the film’s writer. As a result, most of the film is an intriguing and enjoyable sci-fi movie.

Sadly, the ending is where everything falls apart, pulling off a 180-degree tonal shift that causes more whiplash than satisfaction. Such a shame to see so much potential wasted.

The 2019 psychological thriller should have been an excellent take on modern-day suburban life. As the film goes on, though, it’s clear that the writers couldn’t find a way to stick the landing.

I get what they’re trying to accomplish here and make a play on how people can feel trapped by today’s pressures of societal expectations, but it feels like the ending came from a completely different movie.

Wild at Heart

It’s not uncommon to see a movie ending circle back to where it all begins. Sometimes, it works out. Most of the time, however, it has us feeling like we just wasted two hours of our time.

That’s the case with 1990’s Wild at Heart, a movie where it ends right where we got started, having us wonder what the point of anything truly was. Then again, this is a David Lynch film, so that feels par for the course.

Pay It Forward

To be honest, I’ve never understood the hype around this movie, and the ending only makes it worse.

Essentially, Haley Joel Osment decides to do a good deed for people with the plan of them doing good deeds for other people as well. Seems like a nice idea, right? Well, at some point, Haley Joel Osment is killed by the school bully, so a bunch of people held a candlelight vigil on his mom’s lawn because they were touched by a 12-year-old’s school project.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado

2015’s Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve, is an incredible film. The 2018 sequel, notably not directed by Denis Villeneuve, has a terrible ending.

In what world do you get shot in the face, survive, and then take in the kid who shot you in the face under your wing? What are we doing here?

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Look, say what you want about Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but most of it is pretty harmless fun, and that’s what I wanted in a modern-day Indiana Jones film.

What I didn’t want, however, is aliens. Why are there aliens? What is going on here? Yes, the franchise has brought in some otherworldly spirits before, but aliens just felt so completely out of place. Ugh.

Knowing

There’s actually a pretty interesting premise in Knowing: kids are being possessed and write a code about every major disaster from the past to the future where everyone does.

So what’s the “magic” behind it? It’s aliens. Again. And they take those kids away before the Earth is destroyed. What was the point of any of this?

The Village

You’d think that this would be the perfect chance to bring up M. Night Shyamalan’s film that actually has aliens in it, but I don’t actually hate the ending to Signs.

The Village, however, oh boy. The twist being that the film actually takes place in the modern day made me, along with the rest of the theater I was in, scream with disgust.

The Birds

I want to make something clear: the ending to The Birds is a stylistic choice where there wasn’t supposed to be a conclusive ending. The film just…ends.

Having said that, it was still beyond frustrating nonetheless. I get that it was something that hit home a little more back when the movie originally released in 1963. When I first saw it in the late ’90s, though, that wasn’t anything new, and I was pretty mad at the film’s lack of a true ending.

I Am Legend

I absolutely loved the novel the film is based on. The movie should have stuck with the original ending.

The twist that Robert Neville is the real monster, not the “undead vampires” we all thought were monsters, is something I’ll never forget. Instead, the film goes for the cheap, happy, Hollywood-style ending, taking the sails out of the entire film.

Rose was always a jerk for throwing the Heart of the Ocean into the water.

Then again, if she didn’t, we wouldn’t have that guy who jumped into the ocean for Brittany Spears.
