The most glaring plot holes can ruin even the best of movies.
Okay, so maybe that’s a little extreme, but even otherwise spectacular movies can leave us scratching our heads with their plot holes. Does it always ruin the experience? No, but it still has us questioning things.
With that in mind, let’s have a little fun and list some of the biggest plot holes in movie history, regardless of whether or not they ruin the film.
Toy Story

One of the big plot points in the original Toy Story is that Buzz Lightyear does not think he’s a toy. He thinks he’s a real Space Ranger.
With that said, why does he freeze up around humans like other toys?
Ocean’s 11

Look, I love this movie, but there’s always been one thing about the ending sequence that confuses me.
How did the flyers get into the vault for the team to send them up as fake money? Where did they come from?
Back to the Future Part II

Okay, so we all know that Biff steals the sports almanac, goes back in time to past Biff, and changes the course of the future. This results in branching timelines when Marty and Doc go back to 1985.
So then how does Biff travel from 1955 to the same 2015 if the timeline changed based on his actions? Shouldn’t he arrive in an alternate 2015?

Jurassic Park

Is Jurassic Park one of the greatest films of all time? Yes. Does it hold up well today? Also yes. Is there a big plot hole? You bet.
There’s a cliff that randomly appears in the T-Rex paddock that’s only there to add some tension. Yet they’re still climbing down the fence into what should be a 30-foot drop!
Cinderella

When the clock strikes midnight on poor Cinderella, everything turns back to how it was.
Well, almost everything: the glass slipper remains a glass slipper. Shouldn’t that have also changed back?
Raiders of the Lost Ark

An oldie but a goodie. One of the most famous “plot holes” of all time is that the presence and actions of Indiana Jones do not impact the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark in any way, shape, or form.
Even if Indiana wasn’t there when they opened the ark, the outcome would have been the same. Well, except for the top men who would be working on it.
Ratatouille

Here’s a film where the actions of its main character do impact the events of the film. If Remy doesn’t go into the old lady’s house to get saffron, he’s not forced to escape to Paris.
With that said, what random old lady in rural France has saffron on hand like that?
Spider-Man: No Way Home

No Way Home features a cast of Spider-Man villains being brought into the MCU due to the actions of Peter Parker. They also all know who Peter Parker is.
Electro shouldn’t, though, as there was never a moment or scene in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that would give Electro the knowledge that Peter Park is Spider-Man.
Avengers: Endgame

While we’re on the topic of the MCU, why did the Avengers just not go back in time to ask Hank Pym to make more Pym Particles?
Before you say anything about changing the course of history, they already had to take a detour by going back in time to 1970. Plus, there’s the whole Steve saying with Peggy thing, too, so yeah, history was changing either way!
The Matrix

One of the biggest revelations in The Matrix is how Cipher meets Agent Smith in an attempt to turn on Morpheus. Neo even catches him late at night preparing to do so.
There’s just one issue: who plugged Cipher into the Matrix? Additionally, who unplugged him from the Matrix?
Independence Day

The only reason humanity is able to survive the alien invasion is that they injected the alien mothership and entire computer system with a virus.
Were the aliens really using Windows 95 as an operating system? There’s a deleted scene that explains how it works, but that’s a deleted scene that wasn’t in the final cut of the film. Therefore, we have this pretty big plot hole.
Signs

The one weakness the aliens in Signs had was water.
Good thing they were on a planet that is mostly made up of water. Seriously, water is everywhere on Earth, but it only harms them when it’s appropriate for the plot.
Die Hard

Yes, Die Hard is one of the best action movies of all time, but as I mentioned earlier, even the best movies have major plot holes.
Here we have the issue of terrorists driving an ambulance out of the truck they arrived in. Smart play, yes, but there’s one issue: at the start of the film, we see the terrorists walking out of that same truck. So where did the ambulance come from?
Primal Fear

If I were able to get away with murder, I’d probably gloat too. I understand where Edward Norton is coming from.
That said, I wouldn’t also admit to an additional crime while gloating. The case against Archbishop Rushman can’t be brought up again due to Double Jeopardy, but he could 100% be put on trial for admitting that he killed his girlfriend.
Inception

Full disclosure: Inception does such a good job of having us question what’s real and what isn’t that this could just be another intelligent filmmaking choice by Nolan.
With that said…why doesn’t Cobb just arrange for his kids to come visit him? His father-in-law does; he can’t bring the grandkids with him one time?
