Sydney Sweeney to star in ‘Split Fiction’ film adaptation

Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney will star in a silver-screen adaptation of Electronic Arts’ mega-successful co-op video game Split Fiction, according to Variety.

Wicked‘s Jon M. Chu will direct, with Deadpool & Wolverine screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese penning the script. Sweeney will executive produce the flick.

Though no details have been released regarding Sweeney’s role in the film, Variety says the Anyone But You actress will portray one of the game’s two female protagonists.

The blonde actress, however, does bear a resemblance to Zoe, an extroverted, quirky, and naively optimistic fantasy author.

Split Fiction, a multiplayer-only 3D platformer from It Takes Two developer Hazelight Studios, became a blockbuster success after its release on March 6. Figures from Hazelight show the game sold more than 2 million copies in just the seven days following its release.

The two-player title follows Zoe and Mio, two young aspiring fiction writers hoping a popular publisher picks up their works. After the two independently respond to a promising message from Rader Publishing, they quickly discover things aren’t exactly what they seem.

Split Fiction utilizes a split-screen display and requires two players to collaborate, each using their character’s unique abilities to progress.

This announcement follows the recent success of other game-to-movie adaptations, such as Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog films, Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and small-screen interpretations like Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout and (HBO) Max’s The Last of Us.

Additionally, Sweeney will also star in and produce Universal’s OutRun adaptation alongside director Michael Bay. OutRun, a revolutionary arcade racing game franchise from Sega, first zipped into arcades in 1986.
