Nintendo’s Switch 2 console launched just days ago, and the small-but-mighty handheld is already breaking brand records.
In a news release, gaming giant Nintendo announced its latest release has sold more than 3.5 million units globally, making it the fastest-selling home game system in company — and industry — history.
Daniel Ahmad of market data analysis brand Niko Partners took to X (formerly Twitter) to elaborate on Nintendo’s celebratory post. “This makes it not just the best selling Nintendo console in the first 4 days, but the fastest selling home video game console of all time,” replied Ahmad. He continues: “For reference, it took the PS4 two weeks to sell 2.1m units and six weeks to sell 4.2m units. It took the PS5 seven weeks to sell through 4.4m units … PS5 was supply constrained at launch + it launched on Nov 12 in select markets with a full global launch 1 week later. Switch 2 is not supply constrained, had a single global launch day, and increased production to ensure it met day 1 demand.”
According to Nintendo’s latest figures, the brand is on track to hit its 15 million-unit sales goal by the end of its fiscal year in March 2026.
Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer Doug Bowser issued a celebratory statement in which he praised the brand’s dedicated base. “Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go,” Bowser said. “We are thankful for their response and happy to see the fun they are already having with Nintendo Switch 2 as they explore new features and games that bring friends and family together in new ways.”
Despite consumer complaints and concerns regarding the console’s price tag, eyebrow-raising business strategies, and the Trump administration’s fluctuating tariffs, many fans attended midnight releases across the country. Major home electronics retailers like GameStop and Best Buy brought back late-night launches, a move rarely seen since the COVID-19 pandemic trimmed frills from many a consumer celebration. The fan-serving strategy likely incentivized some nostalgic fans to opt for in-person launches at brick-and-mortar stores over Amazon and other online retailers.
The new console is the successor to the brand’s original Switch handheld, first released in 2017. The sleek new hardware is available for around $450 if you opt for the console alone; the Switch 2’s Mario Kart World bundle will run gamers about $500 (provided you can find one, that is).
