Actor Charlie Cox feels like ‘fraud’ following ‘Expedition 33’ success

We’re nearly halfway through 2025, and while the last six months have seen several successful video game releases, no one’s had a better year than those behind commercial and critical darling Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The cerebral, JRPG-inspired epic from French studio Sandfall Interactive has been a Game of the Year contender since its April 24 release, its pop culture prominence even propelling U.S. interest in the language altogether.

Still, one person has yet to join Esquie for a swim-swim: actor Charlie Cox, the voice of Expedition 33 protagonist Gustave.

In a video shared to X by a Charlie Cox fan account, the Daredevil: Born Again actor took the mic during a Washington State Summer Con panel, addressing the game’s success. “I don’t mean to minimize it in any way, and it’s so cool—apparently, the game is awesome,” Cox said before admitting he’s not into gaming himself. “I have no idea, I haven’t played it. My agent asked me if I wanted to go and do a voiceover. I was in a studio for four hours, maybe? And people keep saying how amazing it is, and ‘congratulations,’ and I feel like a total fraud. But I’m so thrilled for the company, I’m so thrilled that it did really well.”

The MCU actor’s portrayal is a poignant one, regardless of time spent in the booth. Cox is in good company, too, his Gustave performance complementing other captivating contributions from stars like Andy Serkis, Ben Starr, and Jennifer English.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been available for just 60 days, and Sandfall is already busy teasing more content. One recent Bluesky post says the team is currently “exploring a wide range of future improvements — from accessibility features to new content and all sorts of bits and bobs … this also includes expanded localisation options!”

Frankly, as a fan who concluded her Expedition 33 save at around 200 hours and near-100% completion, I’ll be among the first in line for any new content. Here’s hoping Cox soon feels more “whee!” than “whoo” about his contribution.
