Surreal indie roguelike Sol Cesto sells 100k units

Frenetic fantasy roguelike Sol Cesto has surpassed 100,000 digital copies sold, a feat its achieved after launching on Steam. The indie up-and-comer departed Early Access on April 10 after almost a year, likely a treat to the 170,000-odd Steam users with the game on their wishlists. The Sol Cesto team — save for its developers, who the message says are on a “well deserved few days break” — shared the impressive feat in a new message to fans on Steam.

“First and foremost, we wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone, once again,” the grateful message begins. “To people that were there even before Early Access launch, or to those who just joined us on the quest to retrieve the sun, you’ve been sending a lot of nice words, there’s been gorgeous fan arts shared across the social medias, and that’s really heartwarming.”

In addition to shouting out the game’s day-ones, the Sol Cesto team also addressed fans’ bug run-ins, citing negative reviews from Steam Deck users before confirming the game’s V 1.0 is available natively on Linux. “We’ve also read the negative reviews, and people having issues with the game. There’s been a delay on the Linux native version going out in 1.0, and we apologize about it, but 1.0 is now out natively on Linux!”

Several Steam Deck users have taken to the game’s Steam reviews or social media profiles to share in-game issues like blank displays. “However, while playing on a Linux System (including Steamdeck) via proton, you might have a white screen issue when launching the game ; we’re aware of it and working on it.”

“Currently, the developpers [sic] (being two people full time, and only one coder) are having a well deserved few days break. While we know it might be frustrating for some of you to have issues not fixed right away, as you might guess, the journey to a 1.0 version isn’t all calm. We’d rather delay the hotfix for a few days if it allows people who develop the game to feel better. We hope you’ll understand this decision. They’ll resume work by Thursday at the latest, and our goal, counting development and QA tests, would be to deliver an update with a lot of fixes sometime next week[.]”

Before closing, the Sol Cesto crew also notes some players’ frustrations with lost save data. “[W]e’ve seen that some of you were annoyed that they lost their progress between 1.0 and EA, even with the 1500 gold compensation. Sorry! While we totally understand your frustration, we did not have the choice, as there was a technical conflict between EA and 1.0 versions (due to the revamp of the meta progression), forcing us to reset them. However we should’ve communicated on this as soon as we knew this would be the case, and we apologize for this.”

“We’ll keep you posted when the next patch is coming out! Thanks for your patience,” the message closes.

About Sol Cesto

Sol Cesto, a fantastical and largely luck-based roguelike from developers Géraud Zucchini and Chariospirale, launched on Steam earlier this week to predominantly positive reviews. At the time of writing, Sol Cesto‘s Steam listing shows a “Very Positive” review average with more than 1,100 English-language reviews.

Sol Cesto really puts the “dungeon” in “dungeon crawler.” At the start of their adventure to save the sun — or sol in Español — the game’s playable characters surround a dimly lit cave. From here, explorers “[c]hoose a hero, upgrade them using cursed teeth and magical items, and descend to the bottom of an ever-changing dungeon.”

While strategy is certainly required for success in Sol Cesto, you’ll be relying on a considerable amount of luck. The game’s 4X4 grid-like floors feel more like slot machines at times, as players must select one of four rows and randomly fall into one of its four tiles. Whether you land in a square with a squashable baddie, pick up a healing strawberry, open a coin-packed chest, or fall onto spikes, well, that’s for fate to decide. Maddening at times? Yes. Addictive? My gosh, yes.

Pick up Sol Cesto today on Steam for just $9.37 ’til the launch-day deal ends on April 24.
