The ever-growing catalog of indie games on Steam comprises tens of thousands of titles across countless genres, but let’s be frank: some genres get a little more love than others. Eccentric, offbeat, cerebral, psychedelic, absurdist, weird — whatever your descriptor, the indie-dominated “surreal” niche is an oft-forgotten one. But as creative developers continue to captivate players with daring visuals, ambient sound design, and unique gameplay mechanics, interest in these uncanny thinkers is rising.
As a millennial who regularly tuned into absurdist TV shows like The Mighty Boosh, Xavier: Renegade Angel, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, and Look Around You, I feel equipped to say that I’m among the target audience for these nonsensical bangers. Take a gander at five unconventional indies I can’t get off my mind:
Burden Street Station

“Enter a surreal universe where memories are harvested from mortals and sold as sentient books to celestial consumers! But when God goes missing and production stops, it’s up to a lowly librarian and his reluctant sidekick Memo to investigate.”
Critical Reflex and IODINE’s abstract new release, Burden Street Station, is out now on Steam! Wishlist this weird adventure, or dive right in.
Screaming Head

“In this psychedelic 2d platformer you are a walking head named Mr Head and your wives have been kidnapped by your own body! Now you have to scream your way back to them! This game is darkly comedic, bold, artistic, flips familiar gaming concepts on its HEAD and has an amazingly punchy soundtrack,” teases the game’s Steam blurb.
A truly entertaining platformer with wacky mechanics and a seriously unique story, Screaming Head will have you screaming, too, but with laughter and platformer-induced frustration. Check out Screaming Head, a bold and bizarre 2D adventure from developer JZPS Games, on Steam now.
Titanium Court

Go ahead. Try to make sense of Titanium Court‘s bizarre Steam description. I’ll wait.
This eye-popping strategy game incorporates all kinds of challenges — tower defense, matching, roguelike elements — in one big absurdist fantasy adventure. Titanium Court, the award-winning pixel-art puzzler from AP Thomson and Fellow Traveller, is available now for PC via Steam! Or try before you buy by downloading the game’s free demo.
Sol Cesto

Sol Cesto has secured an irrevokable spot on my “Game of the Year” list. I know it’s only May. I said what I said.
This challenging, habit-forming, and visually impressive roguelike dungeon crawler sends players into a cursed dungeon packed with frightening beasts, mystical items, alluring treasures, and more. Pick your hero, each one with their own special abilities, and press your luck! See if you can make it through this unforgiving tactical puzzle in one piece. Check out Sol Cesto on Steam today!
Dice Have No Eyes

In this brand-new self-billed “[s]urreal dice-rolling roguelike about luck and greed,” in-game gamblers utilize trinkets, treats, and spells to dominate daring runs. “Feed your dice dumplings, collect game bending trinkets, roll too much and lose it all. Or get lucky, unlock King Fetus, meet God and you might just wake up.”
Dice Have No Eyes just launched in Early Access on May 20, 2026, and is available on Steam for an introductory price of $5.99 — or less if you’re able to bundle a compatible game from your library.
