Checkmate! On Friday, turn-based chess roguelike Gambonanza officially launched on PC via Steam, iOS, and Android. The high-stakes title from solo game dev Blukulele and publishers Sidekick Publishing and Stray Fawn twists traditional chess matches into contemporary challenges using powerful combos, funky boards, rewarding player progression, and other popular roguelike deckbuilder elements. “Set on a tiny board with higher stakes. Master tactical twists, invest your winnings and discover new rule-bending Gambits, tile and piece combinations!”
Don’t let the game’s charming pixel-art chess boards fool you; Gambonanza is a high-risk, high-reward take on the traditional tabletop game, but one that doesn’t alienate those unfamiliar with chess. Players don’t have to be chess experts to strategize and face off against challenging bosses using supercharged combos.
Gambonanza shone during Steam Next Fest in February 2026; the game’s demo became one of the event’s most popular titles, amassing more than 170,000 demo downloads. According to gaming data aggregator SteamDB, about 1,000 Steam users are currently playing Gambonanza.
Retro aesthetics meet contemporary roguelike mechanics in Gambonanza

As part of the game’s full launch, Gambonanza is bringing “a range of eagerly awaited features, including over 150 Gambits inspired by real-life chess players.” Sidekick Publishing says some of these include:
- “The ROOOOOOK’s Gambit → GothamChess
- Hyper Bullet’s* Gambit → Andrew Tang (PenguinGM1) (*players have ~30–15 seconds for the entire game)
- Beth’s Gambit → The Queen’s Gambit (Netflix series)
- Anna’s Family Gambit → Anna Cramling“
Other fundamental gameplay elements include:
- “Synergistic Gambits: Over 150 Gambits allow players to alter the properties of their run, such as supercharging specific pieces or forcing enemies to skip turns.
- Tactical Board Upgrades: Players can enhance the chessboard with golden squares, blessing tiles, and protective surfaces to gain a tactical edge.
- Dynamic Reserve System: A unique off-board storage system allows players to keep extra pieces in reserve, deploying them at pivotal moments to shift the balance of power.
- High-Impact Rounds: Smaller starting boards intensify the strategic tension, delivering quick yet deep gameplay sessions.
- Retro Aesthetic: The game features vibrant pixel art and a nostalgic CRT filter, complemented by a quirky atmosphere and mini-games inspired by slot machines, pachinko and Gachapon.
- Twitch Extension: Launching alongside release, the game features a custom Twitch Extension introducing a “Hand & Brain” mode for streamers and their live chat, turning each run into a collaborative experience with an interactive, stream-first gameplay loop.”
