God Save Birmingham gets dynamic new update ahead of Closed Beta

Video game developer Ocean Drive Studio and publisher Kakao Games, the folks behind the upcoming open-world survival adventure God Save Birmingham, released a third Developer Update video to let players glimpse new features and improvements ahead of the game’s Closed Beta Test, which kicks off later today at 3 p.m. PT/6 p.m. ET.

The 8-minute video shows off what developers have worked on since their February 2026 update. “In this video, we’re diving into some of the biggest additions to the game so far like the new crafting systems, dynamic weather system, changes to combat, and more,” reads Ocean Drive Studios’ video description on YouTube. “Try for yourself by signing up for Closed Beta on Steam, available from June 22 to 29.”

Devs don’t mince words in their latest update. “The goal of this Closed Beta is straightforward: test the latest balance changes, find bugs, and gather feedback at a scale the Core Group Test wasn’t designed for.”

“Since the Core Group Test, we’ve been heads-down addressing bugs, tuning hunger/thirst/fatigue balance, and improving controls based on what our testers found. We’re at a point where we feel we need your help to take it further.”

“The more players we get in, the more we learn.”

As far as performance goes, returning players will note more responsive controls, stronger enemies, and speedier battle animations.

As for in-game content, gamers will find one-handed swords and halberds for the first time. In their Monday news release, God Save Birmingham devs said fans can anticipate more medieval melee tools in the future, though they did not offer a timeline. If players feel frisky, they can also beckon the undead for a battle by shouting.

Survival elements have been improved, too, with the addition of new livestock, harvestable fruits and veggies, and collectible drinking water. Devs amplified the gritty realism by adding stomach bugs that players can catch from contaminated liquids. Still thirsty? Pick up a beer or another historically accurate beverage. Be mindful of your ale consumption, though, as your playable character can drink a little too much, making your survival even more difficult.

In a Dev Log shared with Steam followers on Friday, June 19, the God Save Birmingham team said their Core Group Test earlier this month helped them identify “several areas that still need work, but [they] also saw encouraging signs that the game is moving in the right direction.”

“We also want to be very clear and upfront with you,” devs explained in their June 19 post, “this is only a Beta build and not the final iteration of God Save Birmingham. You may run into bugs, glitches, and optimization issues, as our focus has been on core gameplay and the overall progression loop.”

God Save Birmingham Production Director Soonook Shin highlighted the importance of quality over quantity in a news release published on Monday.

“While the team would love to include and showcase more features in the game, we believe that making things well is more important than making a lot.”

“Therefore we intend to focus on creating a great game by continuously developing, testing and refining content.”
