Montabi: Creature-collector roguelike hits PC, XBOX this summer

Indonesian independent game developer Mankibo and publisher Akupara Games announced that their upcoming creature-collector roguelike deckbuilder, Montabi, is coming to XBOX One, XBOX Series X|S, and PC later this summer. The Montabi team confirmed the game’s release date — August 6, 2026 — in a rhythmic new trailer shown during the Summer Game Fest SEA Games Showcase.

In Montabi, players take their tamed critters, called Montabi, on a journey to save their town. Using their carefully curated critter collection, gamers must take down opponents in strategic card battles set on 3×3 grids. Evolve your Montabi, unlock new cards, combine creatures to execute powerful team moves, and hone each creature’s unique skills to save the bustling city you call home. Need a breather? Take your Trainer and Montabi to a cafe to replenish your health before getting back at it.

In addition to Montabi‘s nearly two dozen starter creatures and more than 500 playable cards, gamers must also choose their Trainer. Pick your best fit based on your typical playstyle, or break out of your comfort zone by trying other Trainers’ varied techniques. Still, whether you stick with your picks or not, trust that no two rounds of Montabi are alike.

Indie game studio Mankibo, established by Boy Dozan in March 2022, was “founded with a mission” of inclusivity, accessibility, and kindness. “[W]hat if there was a place that welcomed everyone, regardless of their background, physical condition, education, or experience?” Mankibo’s official website asks. “A place where people are treated with respect, compassion, and provided with a safe environment to have fun and create what they believe in—a fun game!”

Mankibo’s website also highlights its eight members and shares its core tenets: empathy, openness, resilience, and excellence.

Creatives at Mankibo have been working on Montabi for years. The team shared their first devlog update back in February 2023, offering glimpses at since-retired character prototypes, interface designs, and gameplay mechanics.

Indie publisher Akupara Games was formed in 2016 by CEO David Logan. The label “support[s] their developers through an involved and personalized pipeline to bring games to communities of players who are looking for their next enveloping experience,” with the goal of “bring[ing] stories to life and usher[ing] in the next line of gaming classics.”

Among Akupara’s best-known published projects are Spooky Doorway’s The Darkside Detective, Videocult’s Rain World, and à la mode games’ Sorry We’re Closed.
