Microsoft unveils Y2K-inspired XBOX Series X25

On Sunday, Microsoft gave gamers their first look at a new 25th-anniversary edition XBOX console and controller. The nostalgic hardware, revealed during XBOX Games Showcase 2026, introduced fans to the XBOX Series X25 Limited Edition. The redesigned XBOX Series X and matching gamepad sport a translucent green shell reminiscent of the gaming brand’s Y2K-era technofuturistic motif. XBOX shared more about the system in an XBOX Wire update.

“To celebrate 25 years of XBOX built alongside players, we’re introducing the XBOX 25th anniversary collection. Inspired by the look and feel of the original XBOX console, both the console and controller feature a translucent OG Green design, with subtle tributes to the journey we’ve been on together. You’ll also discover a few hidden surprises throughout, as a thank you to the community.”

“This is just one of the ways we’re celebrating 25 years of XBOX with you, the players who have made XBOX what it is. Thank you.”

Though translucent tech was everywhere in the late 1990s through the early aughts — iMac G3, Nintendo 64, PlayStation 2, among others — this launch will mark the first time XBOX gives it a go. The featured shade of green, however, is XBOX through and through.

“For the first time, we’re bringing a translucent design to XBOX Series X, drawing inspiration from the original XBOX and OG Green so many players remember. The XBOX Series X25 Limited Edition respects our history, with the power and performance of the XBOX Series X, including 1 TB of storage, and a design that reflects where we’ve been and the community that’s been with us along the way.”

In addition to the reimagined console, XBOX announced it would release a corresponding gamepad. Available in the same iconic shade of green, the XBOX Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition features several design elements that “[call] back to the beginning” of the brand. Much like the bulky “Duke” controller, the X25 iteration also features ABXY buttons in four distinct colors, black-and-white bumper buttons, and a battery hatch bearing the classic brand logo.

Looks like this year’s holiday wishlists have a new fixture — provided fluctuating consumer tech prices don’t make this release a lost cause for budgeting buyers. At the time of writing, neither pricing nor preorder information is available.

The limited-edition console and controller will be available as a pair beginning this November, though players can also pick up the new controller separately.
