Halloween’s just a few weeks out, so look alive! Unless you’re a zombie, in which case, just…keep doing what you’re doing. Lookin’ good, buddy.
Whether you’ve already filled your plastic candy cauldron or you’re leaving your porch light off this year, there are still myriad ways to ring in chiller temps, crunchy leaves, and seasonal 5-‘o-clock sunsets. Instead of cozying up on the sofa and binging scary movies, gamers can head to Steam and explore the platform’s exhaustive horror game catalog.
Independent game makers might have smaller budgets, but smaller teams and solo video game developers can often launch projects without shareholders looking over their shoulders. This independence means devs can get even more creative, taking artistic risks that corporate publishers likely wouldn’t greenlight.
Scared yet? Take a gander at these eight unique new indie horror games coming to Steam before Halloween and add ’em all to your wishlist now:
The Doll Shop (Monday, Oct. 12)

The Doll Shop is an entrancing hand-drawn horror from Japanese artist Atelier Sentô. In this story — “part romance, part horror” — players follow a young dollmaker whose childhood friend returns to their village. Soon, players “must choose between [their] beloved dolls and the hope of a new life… if it’s not already too late.”
Repair dolls, explore your quaint (and beautifully illustrated) countryside village, and rub elbows with neighbors. But be careful, because your interactions may have unseen consequences…
Which of The Doll Shop‘s three endings will you get? Find out when this resonant romance-horror hits Steam on October 12. Try the free demo on Steam for an early look.
Tenebris Somnia (Friday, Oct. 16)

Tenebris Somnia, a pixel survival-horror game from indie publisher New Blood Interactive, has made its way to many Steam wishlists since its reveal in 2022. In this story, players “[u]nveil the depths of a disturbing story by solving puzzles and fighting horrible creatures.”
When you reach key points in your adventure, you’ll watch “sequences from a completely different point of view, made in live action with real actors and practical effects – created by a professional and award winning film crew from Argentina.”
Feelin’ a little scared? Hey, same! Don’t be afraid to try Tenebris Somnia on for size by downloading the free Steam demo now.
Dreadline Express (Friday, Oct. 16)

Dreadline Express, revealed during Insider Gaming’s 28 Games Later: A Horror Games Showcase earlier this week, is a suspenseful “metroidbrainia” set on a post-apocalyptic planet Earth, and you, my dear rider, are aboard the last locomotive containing human life. “Unravel mysteries of the enigmatic train, face strange passengers, and shape your path using a unique card-based mechanic that gives you full narrative control,” the game’s Steam logline reads.
Check out the newest trailer on YouTube now and wishlist Dreadline Express ahead of its October 16 launch. Impatient conductors can download the game’s free demo on Steam to tide themselves over. Toot-toot!
Sparky Rush: Purrils in Pawsville! (Friday, Oct. 16)

Don’t let the charming fifth-gen graphics fool you. Sparky Rush: Purrils in Pawsville is a “lost media” psychological horror in which its developer “descends into complete sorrow and madness.” Not you, though. You’re a golden retriever.
Lean into your Y2K-era 3D platformer prowess — clear obstacles, collect coins, collapse enemies, and “discover all the morbid secrets left by its creator before his sudden disappearance.” Fetch Sparky Rush: Purrils in Pawsville! when it comes to Steam on October 16.
Heads-up: An “AI Generated Content Disclosure” on Sparky Rush‘s Steam listing confirms developers used artificial intelligence “exclusively for text translation” in select languages. Devs say they “welcome community support for translating and improving” this text.
Blue Ridge Hunting (Oct. 20)

Blue Ridge Hunting, an official selection from Six One Indie Showcase 2026, is a co-op Appalachian horror where players — solo or with some help — investigate, log, track, and hunt horrifying cryptids and other supernatural phenomena found throughout the regional mountain range.
“Earn money from successful investigations and upgrade your gear at Levi’s cabin to take on even greater threats. But beware: you’re not alone out there. These creatures are always watching… and listening.”
Blue Ridge Hunting launches in Steam Early Access on Tuesday, Oct. 20, so add it to your wishlist right now. Appalachia awaits…
The Mailroom (Monday, Oct. 26)

There’s some comfort in familiarity. The Mailroom, a new Hell-set workplace sim, has players endure the monotonous horrors of the underworld’s deadest-end job: a human mail clerk. As hell’s new hire, you’ll identify offbeat specimens, sort envelopes, sort infernal mail, maintain equipment, and maybe even dissect a critter or two. Ultimately, your job is to make it through your shift. Seems easy, right? Ask the folks at your local BMV. They’ll tell you.
Download the demo for The Mailroom on Steam and wishlist it today. You’ll get a nice reminder email when the game launches on October 26.
Mimic (Tuesday, Oct. 27)

Mimic, a gory asymmetric survival-horror from independent developer-publisher Ryan Laley, might be the hair-raisingest social-deduction game I’ve seen yet. Each round of Mimic looks different, as players discreetly receive one of three role assignments: Crew, Agent, or Mimic. From here, you must complete your respective new goals while keeping a keen eye on opponents trying to sabotage your success.
“Survive the killer Android hunting you, and hunt from the shadows as the Mimic; a shape-shifting terror hiding amongst you.”
Mimic launches in Steam Early Access on October 27. Wishlist it now, and check out the game’s spooky showcase trailer shown during Insider Gaming’s 28 Games Later broadcast earlier this week.
INKBLOOD (TBD)

In INKBLOOD, the unsettling 2D puzzler from Mouthwashing publisher Critical Reflex and developer Hey Bird!, players become “Inquisitor[s] following a trail of death.”INKBLOOD‘s short, foreboding logline sends a chill down my spine: “A cult is at work, your predecessor has vanished, and the region teeters on the edge of chaos. Find the truth. Uphold the Inquisition. Do not fail.”
No release date deets yet; here’s hoping we hear more as we approach Steam Next Fest and Halloween. Try the game’s downloadable Steam demo while you wait for its full launch, and subscribe to Critical Reflex’s YouTube channel to catch new INKBLOOD teasers (and maybe a release date reveal, too).
